An important step towards developing a rapid, inexpensive diagnostic method for autism has been take by Uppsala University, among other universities. Through advanced mass spectrometry the researchers managed to capture promising biomarkers from a tiny blood sample. The study has just been published in the prestigious journal Nature Translational Psychiatry.

There are no acknowledged biomarkers for autism today. Researchers at Berzelii Centre and the Science for Life Laboratory in Uppsala who, in collaboration with colleagues at Linnaeus University in Sweden and the Faculty of Medicine in Tehran, Iran, who have discovered some promising biomarkers.

Many diseases are caused by protein alterations inside and outside the body's cells. By studying protein patterns in tissue and body fluids, these alterations can be mapped to provide important information about underlying causes of disease. Sometimes protein patterns can also be used as biomarkers to enable diagnosis or as a prognosticating tool to monitor the development of a disease. In the current study disruptions of the nervous system were in focus when the scientists studied protein patterns in autism spectrum disorder (ASD).

To identify potential biomarkers (peptides or proteins), the researchers performed a detailed protein analysis of blood plasma from children with ASD compared with a control group. Using advanced mass spectrometric methods, they succeeded in identifying peptides consisting of fragments of a protein whose natural function is in the immune system, the complement factor C3 protein.

The study is based on blood samples from a relatively limited group of children, but the results indicate the potential of our methodological strategy. There is already a known connection between this protein and ASD, which further reinforces the findings, says Jonas Bergquist, professor of analytical chemistry and neurochemistry at the Department of Chemistry BMC (Biomedical Centre) in Uppsala.

The hope is that this new set of biomarkers ultimately will lead to a reliable blood-based diagnostic tool.

###

Facts: Autism spectrum disorder is a collective name for neuropsychiatric disturbances that lead to functional impairment in at least two of the three areas that characterize autism:

  • reciprocal social interaction
  • reciprocal verbal and non-verbal communication
  • imagination and behaviour

ASD comprises:

  • Autism
  • Asperger's syndrome
  • Disintegrative disorder (Heller's syndrome)
  • Atypical autism

World News - Jewish school slayings suspect dead after France ...

The alleged gunman in a series of deadly shootings in France, including one at a Jewish school near Toulouse, is dead after jumping from the apartment where he was hold up for 32 hours.  NBC's Jim Maceda reports.

By msnbc.com news services

Updated at 10:58 a.m. ET: TOULOUSE, France -- An Islamist extremist?who is believed to have killed seven people in France died Thursday after a shootout with police, officials said.?

Interior Minister Claude Gueant said that Mohamed Merah, a 23-year-old French citizen of Algerian origin who had allegedly confessed to killing three Jewish children and four adults,?was hiding in a bathroom?when special forces officers raided his ground-floor apartment.

Merah leapt out a window with a weapon in his hand after "shooting madly" at?police who were attempting to end the 32-hour standoff, Gueant added.

The Paris prosecutor in charge of investigation told NBC News?police found the video camera he used to film all three attacks and described the footage they found as "very graphic."

Merah was found dead outside his home, Gueant said. Police union sources also confirmed Merah's death, with local prosecutors also saying he had been shot in the head.

Gueant said that two officers were injured during the operation.

Merah told negotiators he?killed three soldiers, three Jewish children and a rabbi to avenge the deaths of Palestinian children and because of French army involvement in Afghanistan.

Authorities said Merah, who claimed to have received training from al-Qaida,?was believed to have?a weapons cache in the apartment including an Uzi and a Kalashnikov assault rifle.

Police special forces officers prepare to raid Mohamed Merah's home in Toulouse, France, on Thursday.

Earlier, assault rifle and other gunfire rang out for around four minutes.?Explosions were also heard. An official told Reuters?that gas was also used during the operation to try?to paralyze him.

A police source?told Reuters that the blasts -- which occurred around 5:35 a.m. ET -- were from flash grenades fired to check for signs of life in the ground-floor apartment. Sustained gunfire was heard in the area around 6:30 a.m. ET.

'No movement during the night'
Before the raid, Gueant told reporters that?there had?been no sign of life from his apartment for 10 hours.

French police are demanding the surrender of Mohamed Merah, the suspect who allegedly shot seven people and then bragged of bringing France to its knees. NBC's Jim Maceda reports.

"There was no movement during the night. We hope he is still alive," Gueant?said on?RTL radio. He added that two shots had been heard during the night.

Merah boasted to police negotiators on Wednesday night that he had brought France to its knees and said his only regret was not having been able to carry out plans for more killings.

Merah filmed the shootings of the children and the rabbi on Monday using a camera strapped to him.

Email trail led cops to suspect in Jewish school slayings

President Nicolas Sarkozy, whose handling of the crisis may influence voters less than five weeks from an election in which he is running for a second term, promised on Wednesday that justice would be done and asked people not to take vengeance.

France's elite RAID commando unit detonated three explosions just before midnight on Wednesday, flattening the main door of the building and blowing a hole in the wall, after it became clear Merah did not mean to keep a promise to turn himself in.

An Interior Ministry official said that police blew up the shutters outside the apartment window to pressure him to surrender.

Sporadic blasts and bursts of gunfire rang out throughout the night.

In Israel, tears and defiance at French shooting victims' burial

"What we want is to capture him alive, so that we can bring him to justice, know his motivations and hopefully find out who were his accomplices, if there were any," Defense Minister Gerard Longuet told TF1 television before Thursday's raid.

Merah, who told police negotiators he had accepted a mission from al-Qaida after receiving training in the lawless border area of Pakistan, had identified another soldier and two police officers he wanted to kill, investigators said on Wednesday.

Schools throughout France held a moment of silence in memory of the four killed in the Toulouse school shooting. Meanwhile, French police have launched a massive manhunt for the killer. ITN's Martin Geissler reports.

"He has no regrets, except not having more time to kill more people and he boasts that he has brought France to its knees," Paris Prosecutor Francois Molins, part of the anti-terrorist unit leading the investigation, told a news conference .

The gunman negotiated with police all Wednesday, promising to give himself up and saying that he did not want to die.

"He's explained that he's not suicidal, he doesn't have the soul of a martyr and he prefers to kill but to stay alive himself," the prosecutor said.

Rejected by military
Merah's lawyer Christian Etelin, who has defended him in several minor crimes, said that his client had a tendency towards violence that had worsened after a stay in prison and trips to Afghanistan and Pakistan.

"There was his religious engagement, an increasing hatred against the values of a democratic society and a desire to impose what he believes is truth," Etelin told France 2 television.

Speaking to news channel i-Tele before Merah's death, Etelin said his client "wants to show he is exceptional, omnipotent, and this approach can only end up as something tragic."

He?added that?Merah had tried to join?France's military but was rejected.

Video: State Attorney urges public to be patient in Martin case

>> martin was killed on february 26th . on march 8th , martin's father tracy market held a news conference calling for sanford police to arrest him for the murder. 911 calls were released on the same day attorney for martin's family call for an arrest. and late last night, an investigation into, and today a grand jury will convene on april 10th to investigate the the shoeing. with me, one of the most prominent attorneys in florida . south florida , kendall coffee. i pointed out, you're one of the best. we want to get your thoughts on this. i just got a note from dennis baxley. he tells nbc news, there is nothing that authorizes anyone to pursue and confront. it is a strictly self- defense bill here. as we know, george zimmerman says he was acting in self- defense . what happens now?

>> the stand your ground law has become a huge obstacle to preventing exactly this kind of self-pointed vigilanteism. this kind of vigilante justice. it used to be if you shot somebody in quote/unquote self- defense , you were protected. but in 2005 , florida decided to become the pioneering state to extend this kind of self-protection to wherever the heck you go. like a zimmerman , unless there are witnesses that say, i saw you do it, the kid wasn't pro you, it wasn't self- defense . unless you've got witnesses it becomes very difficult to prove the circumstances that the shooting took place in. so cases have been defeated repeatedly where similar kinds of shooting took place. a lot of time they don't even try to bring the case because it is so hard to get convictions unless you've got witnesses or unless the shooter shoots the victim in the back. what you've got is no witnesses except for the alleged perpetrator who says it was in self- defense . how do you prove that's a lie?

>> with that that, is that why you believe the sanford police department avoided or did not bring this case to the grand jury and accept george zimmerman 's word that he was acting in self- defense . is that because of the difficulty that is presented with this law.

>> the law presents difficulty. it presents an easy out if the police department doesn't want to get very aggressive about investigating it. because certainly, if you have somebody's word, you can still try to break it apart but effective interrogation of the so-called suspect. and if you put that interrogation together with some kind of witness reports, people who said they heard crying or some kind of sound that sounded like it was the young man, right before he was shot. if you try to put those things together, sometimes you can shake the suspect and get to the truth. the problem is if this was a slip shod investigation of a person where there is no actual eyewitnesses, who says he did it in self- defense , it could be very, very hard for anybody to get to the proof and to prove a criminal case beyond a reasonable doubt . i applaud the justice department 's intervention. they're going to look at the actions of the police department . they're going to look at the possibilities of hate crime. but i don't want anyone to be unrealistic in terms of expectations as to where this ends up. it may already be too late to ever get the truth or to ever get a real prosecution out of this case.

>> let me ask you regarding the 911 phone call that were released. calls made by neighbors, who were at least overhearing the commotion and the call made by george zimmerman where the operator says do not get out of your car. do not pursue. does that play a role in all of this in what the grand jury will hear? does that come into play at all?

>> it does come into play and the grand jury will want to hear it and they'll want to hear from the neighbors and they may find it was extremely poor judgment, even reckless judgment in continuing as zimmerman did to pursue the suspect. the problem will be at the end of it all, if all you can get is zimmerman 's story, that he was being attacked. and the only way to contradict that is a couple people who heard things but didn't see things. from a prosecution standpoint, it becomes a very difficult case to get any kind of homicide conviction beyond a reasonable doubt . the proof of that, sadly enough, is that in florida since the stand your ground law was enacted, in these cases generally people don't even get prosecuted anymore. when they have attempted to prosecute these claims of self- defense , they've almost always been acquittals.

>> thank you very much. i know we'll be with you again soon.

Recycled Toilets Make Path Green

60-Second Science60-Second Science | Energy & Sustainability

The Meador-Kansas-Ellis Trail became the first certified sustainable road under the Greenroads rating system, in part because it contains recycled commodes. Sophie Bushwick reports.

More 60-Second Science

Is the attempt to make environmentally friendly roadways doomed to wind up in the toilet? Actually, it may be the other way around. To earn a green certification, the Meador-Kansas-Ellis Trail in Bellingham, Washington, included 400 recycled commodes in the concrete.

Greenroads is a new rating system, developed at the University of Washington, which judges the sustainability of roads and road construction projects. Under the system, projects must incorporate 11 specific features, such as dealing with waste from the construction process, as well as some optional practices, which in the case of the Meador Kansas Ellis Trail included recycling.

The toilet interment helped the project win the first official Greenroads nod, earning a silver certification. About 30 percent of the pavement consists of recycled concrete and, yes, crushed-up toilets, nicknamed ?poticrete.?

But this project?s sustainability relies on more than old thrones. The Trail?s porous concrete prevents excessive run-off; it?s illuminated with low-energy lighting; and its mere presence encourages bicycle and foot traffic. These green features mean that sustainable roadways can be more than a pipe dream.

Engineers enlist weather model to optimize offshore wind plan

ScienceDaily (Mar. 20, 2012) ? Politics aside, most energy experts agree that cheap, clean, renewable wind energy holds great potential to help the world satisfy energy needs while reducing harmful greenhouse gases. Wind farms placed offshore could play a large role in meeting such challenges, and yet no offshore wind farms exist today in the United States.

In a study just published in Geophysical Research Letters, a team of engineers at Stanford has harnessed a sophisticated weather model to recommend optimal placement of four interconnected wind farms off the coast of the Eastern United States, a region that accounts for 34 percent of the nation's electrical demand and 35 percent of carbon dioxide emissions.

"It is the first time anyone has used high-resolution meteorological data to plan the placement of offshore wind grid," said senior author Mark Z. Jacobson, a professor of civil and environmental engineering. "And this sophistication has provided a deeper level of understanding to the grid plan."

Beginning with 12 energetic potential locations, the engineers winnowed down the sites to four optimal sites. Total maximum capacity of the interconnected grid is 2000 megawatts, roughly equivalent to the yearly capacity of one-and-a-half conventional coal-fired power plants. Each farm would have approximately 100 turbines, delivering an individual maximum capacity of 500 megawatts.

"Two thousand megawatts and four farms are somewhat arbitrary figures. The sizes and locations could be adjusted for economic, environmental, and policy considerations," said Jacobson.

"An offshore grid as an extension of the onshore grid in this region will improve reliability, while reducing congestion and energy price differences between areas," said Mike Dvorak, the lead author of the study and a recent PhD graduate in civil and environmental engineering at Stanford.

Optimizing the grid

The optimized grid was located in the waters from Long Island, New York to Georges Bank, a shallows about a hundred miles to the east of Cape Cod. The nearshore locations take advantage of consistent sea breezes that occur naturally due to the daily difference in temperature between land and sea. The offshore farms experience stronger, though less regular, frontal storm activity. The four farms would be interconnected to help balance output across the grid.

"Until recently, large scale wind resource assessments have neglected the aspect of time. We matched peak productivity with peak demand at specific times of day and year," said Dvorak. "Our analysis matches production to demand."

Wind farms on land, for instance, tend to see daily peak output at night, when demand is lower. Seasonally speaking, demand usually spikes in the late afternoons of summer when air conditioning needs are high, but this time of year is also known for a dearth of storms and a meteorological phenomenon known as the Bermuda High, a high-pressure center that affects winds along the entire coast.

"In some areas, like Massachusetts, the Bermuda High boosts sea breezes," said Dvorak. "But south of Long Island, NY, where one offshore grid has been proposed, the Bermuda High has the opposite effect and often hinders sea breezes."

Balance of power

Beyond matching production and demand cycles, the researchers had to balance several technical challenges in their models.

"The farms had to be in waters less than 50 meters deep to allow use of bottom-mounted turbines and near urban load centers like Boston and New York," said Jacobson. "And, we wanted to smooth power output, ease hourly ramp rates and reduce hours of zero power."

The engineers took a novel approach, choosing to interconnect the offshore farms. Offshore wind farms in other parts of the world today are connected individually to the onshore grids.

"The goal is to even out the peaks and valleys in production," said Dvorak. "In our model, expensive no-power events -- moments when individual winds farms are producing zero electricity -- were reduced by more than half from nine percent to four by connecting the farms together."

In the final analysis, the interconnected grid was able to yield a year-long capacity factor of over 48 percent, meaning that the grid could reliably produce close to 1000 megawatts on average over the course of a year.

"Generally, with wind farms, anything over 35 percent average capacity is considered excellent," said Jacobson.

Location. Location. Location.

Among its findings, the Stanford model recommended a farm in Nantucket Sound, precisely where the controversial Cape Wind farm has been proposed. The Cape Wind site is contentious because, opponents say, the tall turbines would diminish Nantucket's considerable visual appeal.

By that same token, the meteorological model puts two sites on Georges Bank, a shallows located a hundred miles offshore, far from view in an area once better known for its prodigious quantities of cod. The fourth site is off central Long Island.

The researchers last looked at the economics of installing their offshore grid, which they said would have the advantage of sharing costs across several states, potentially increasing political support for the plan.

"This paper should be seen as a tool for energy planners to better inform their renewable energy decisions across a densely populated area," said Jacobson. "It is an opportunity to collaborate on a shared system that reduces costs while benefitting a large and important center of electrical demand in the U.S."

This research was supported by the Charles H. Leavell Graduate Fellowship and the US Environmental Protection Agency and the Otto M?nsted Foundation. The NASA Advanced Supercomputing (NAS) Division and NCAR Computational & Information Systems Laboratory (CISL) provided access to computational resources and global weather datasets, respectively.
