Indian mothers hold mass wedding in ?village of sex workers? to save daughters from prostitution

A young Indian bride walks with her family on the way to a wedding organized by a local agency in the village of Vadiya, about 240 kilometers (149 miles) from Ahmedabad, India, Sunday, March 11, 2012. The event, which saw the marriage of eight poor nomadic tribeswomen to eight young men, was organized by a local social assistance group in an effort to prevent the girls from taking to prostitution, a traditionally common source of employment in the village. A young Indian bride walks with her family on the way to a wedding organized by a local agency in the village of Vadiya, India, on Sunday.

A human rights group held a mass wedding ceremony in a village in western India where all the women are sex workers in a ploy to rescue the young brides from the skin trade, according to reports.

The event was held Sunday in the village of Vadia, known locally as "the village of prostitutes," in the western state of Gujarat, Agence France-Presse reported.

In all, eight brides, all either 18 or older, were hitched to young men from local communities, while another 12 girls who are under 18 were engaged at the event.

Mittal Patel, of the Vicharta Samuday Samarthan Manch, the non-profit group that organized the weddings, told AFP that nearly 3,000 people turned out to the event to watch the women attempt to snap the generations-old cycle of sexual profiteering in the village.

"Marriage means that the young girls will be saved from the traditional profession of prostitution," Patel said.

"Once the girl gets married or engaged, she cannot be forced into the flesh trade."

The group spent five years gaining the trust of the young grooms, who previously would have viewed any girl from the "village of prostitutes" as damaged goods.

Vadia was known as a hub for the sex trade since before India gained independence from Britain in 1947 and most of the men work as pimps, the Times of India reported.

In one case, a former client lent a hand in organizing the festivities, which included a massive feast for all the guests.

"I got a call recently and the caller turned out to be a customer," Patel told The Times.

"He said he has a daughter with a prostitute of Vadia, and offered to make a hefty donation."

J.B. Vora, a local official who presided over the weddings, told AFP, ?This is a historic event which is going to bring in a big social change in the lives of the women of Vadia village.?

Upcoming elections crucial, president says

BELGRADE -- Belgrade team chief Borislav Stefanovi? has said that he will make a point to EU mediator Robert Cooper next week that Pri?tina's abuse needs to stop.

Robert Cooper and Borislav Stefanovi? (file)

He explained that Pri?tina's attempts to impose Kosovo license plates and identity documents upon the citizens of Serbia in Kosovo had to be stopped.

Stefanovi?, who should confer with Cooper via a video link next week to discuss the implementation of the agreements reached, reiterated that the Serbian government was committed to implementing all agreements, but that the abuses had to stop.

?There are not much things left to implement. The main issue is the agreement on joint management of the administrative crossings and there will obviously be a lot of technical problems. But we will discuss with Cooper some problems that have arisen in the meantime, which represent a clear abuse by Pri?tina concerning the license plates of our (Serbian) citizens in Kosovo and Metohija and of our documents,? the team head told Tanjug.

He recalled that the leaflets that EULEX had been handing out at the Jarinje and Brnjak administrative crossings the other day, which stated that the citizens of Kosovo must have KS (Kosovo) or RKS (Republic of Kosovo) license plates, Kosovo identity cards and driving licenses starting from June 1, had been put out of force.

?It is good that there are no more of these leaflets and that they have been withdrawn. In any case, they certainly do not reflect the EU position, or that which was agreed in Brussels,? noted Stefanovi?.

?Freedom of movement applies to all alike; it should be broad and should enable people to lead a normal life, rather than worsening the situation by introducing certain categories of population. So we need to bypass all such challenges with a certain package of measures,? he stressed.

The Belgrade lead negotiator confirmed that the Belgrade-Pri?tina dialogue would be continued after the upcoming elections in Serbia were completed and new government was formed, but in the meantime, negotiators will have talks with Cooper either via video link or at informal meetings.

Jets extend QB Sanchez's contract by 3 years

NEW YORK (AP) ? The New York Jets have extended quarterback Mark Sanchez's contract by three years and dropped out of pursuing free agent Peyton Manning.

The team announced the extension for Sanchez in a conference call Friday night, and general manager Mike Tannenbaum says the Jets "looked at" going after Manning before deciding to stick with Sanchez.

Sanchez had two years remaining on the deal he signed when the Jets made him a first-round draft pick in 2009,

Sanchez led the team to the AFC championship game as a wild card in his first two seasons, but struggled as the Jets lost their last three games in 2011 to finish 8-8 and out of the playoffs.

That led to speculation they would pursue Manning, who was released by the Colts on Wednesday.

New York is in the market for a backup quarterback after Mark Brunell served in that role for two seasons. But Sanchez remains the man, as coach Rex Ryan has insisted he would be.

IDRI quest for leprosy vaccine closer to reality with help of million dollar grant

Elimination campaign against ancient, yet prevalent disease, receives critical funding from RHSC Research and Data Institute

Leprosy, otherwise referred to as Hansen's Disease, is one of the most ancient diseases known to humans. Although the World Health Organization declared leprosy to be under control in many previously endemic countries, most experts agree that current approaches to treating the disease are not sufficient to eliminate the disease as a public health problem. Currently, 1.6 billion people are considered at risk of exposure to leprosy, while over 800 new cases occur every day.

The Infectious Disease Research Institute (IDRI) has been awarded a $1 million grant from Renaissance Health Service Corporation (RHSC) and its Research and Data Institute, as the founding sponsor of IDRI's efforts to eliminate the disease of leprosy. The funding will support IDRI's development of a diagnostic to identify early infection of the disease, as well as an effective vaccine to provide long-term protection to those who are most at risk. These new tools, along with currently available drugs to treat people who are infected, will be the basis of the leprosy elimination campaign.

"We are very pleased to be supporting IDRI in its critically important and novel efforts toward the elimination of leprosy in the world," commented Nancy E. Hostetler, Senior Vice President, Corporate and Public Affairs for RHSC. "Although leprosy is widely known, it is also widely ignored. We believe it is tragic that this disease continues to affect millions of people, and take pride in being the founding sponsor of the campaign aimed at finally eliminating it."

Although currently drug therapy during the early stages of the disease reduces its progression and spread, poor diagnostics and lack of access to regular health care often mean that many people who develop leprosy are treated too late, after disfigurement and transmission to others has already occurred. IDRI is nearing the development and licensure of a novel, inexpensive and effective diagnostic that will detect early stages of the disease in a person before they develop clinical symptoms.

Additionally, current leprosy programs are focused solely on detection and treatmentnot prevention. Development of a successful vaccine is critical to leprosy elimination efforts. Toward this end, IDRI has identified the largest panel of M. leprae antigens that are relevant to human disease, which will lead to the components necessary for an effective vaccine. IDRI has also refined a system for testing vaccine candidates and is working with partners, such as the American Leprosy Mission and national health centers around the world, to develop and assess vaccine efficacy.

"We are extremely thankful for Renaissance's vision and support in providing critical funding to develop a novel diagnostic tool, and the launch of an aggressive leprosy elimination program," said Steven G. Reed, PhD, IDRI Founder, President, and CSO. "The long term vision of this partnership is to eradicate leprosy from the 24 countries in which it remains endemic, eliminating the disease once and for all."

Missing: Electron antineutrinos; Reward: Understanding of matter-antimatter imbalance

ScienceDaily (Mar. 8, 2012) ? An international particle physics collaboration has just announced its first results toward answering a longstanding question -- how the elusive particles called neutrinos can appear to vanish as they travel through space.

The result from the Daya Bay Reactor Neutrino Experiment describes a critical and previously unmeasured quality of neutrinos -- and their antiparticles, antineutrinos -- that may underlie basic properties of matter and explain why matter predominates over antimatter in the universe.

Embedded under a mountain near the China Guangdong Nuclear Power Group power plant about 55 kilometers from Hong Kong, the Daya Bay experiment used neutrinos emitted by powerful reactors to precisely measure the probability of an electron antineutrino transforming into one of the other neutrino types.

The results, detailed in a paper submitted to the journal Physical Review Letters, reveal that electron neutrinos transform into other neutrino types over a short distance and at a surprisingly high rate.

"Six percent of the electron antineutrinos emitted from the reactor transform over about two kilometers into another flavor of neutrino. Essentially they change identity," explains University of Wisconsin-Madison physics professor Karsten Heeger. Heeger is the U.S. manager for the Daya Bay antineutrino detectors.

Coincident with presentations by other principal investigators in the Daya Bay collaboration, Heeger is describing the results March 8 in a talk at the Symposium on Electroweak Nuclear Physics, held at Duke University.

Neutrinos oscillate among three types or "flavors" -- electron, muon, and tau -- as they travel through space. Two of those oscillations were measured previously, but the transformation of electron neutrinos into other types over this distance (a so called "mixing angle" named theta one-three, written ?13) was unknown before the Daya Bay experiment.

"We expected that there would be such an oscillation, but we did not know what its probability would be," says Heeger.

The Daya Bay experiment counted the number of electron antineutrinos recorded by detectors in two experimental halls near the Daya Bay and Ling Ao reactors and calculated how many would reach the detectors in a more distant hall if there were no oscillation. The number that apparently vanished on the way -- due to oscillating into other flavors -- gave the value of theta one-three.

After analyzing signals of tens of thousands of electron antineutrinos emitted by the nuclear reactors, the researchers discovered that electron antineutrinos disappeared at a rate of six percent over the two kilometers between the near and far halls, a very short distance for a neutrino.

"Our precise measurement will complete the understanding of the neutrino oscillation and pave the way for the future understanding of matter-antimatter asymmetry in the universe," says Yifang Wang of China's Institute of High Energy Physics, co-spokesperson and Chinese project manager of the Daya Bay experiment.

The value is unexpectedly large and helps explain why the experiment was able to make a precise measurement so quickly, with less than two months' worth of data from just six of the planned eight detectors.

"Although we're still two detectors shy of the complete experimental design, we've had extraordinary success in detecting the number of electron antineutrinos that disappear as they travel from the reactors to the detectors two kilometers away," says Kam-Biu Luk of the U.S. Department of Energy's Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and the University of California at Berkeley. Luk is co-spokesperson of the Daya Bay Experiment and heads U.S. participation.

The researchers confirmed the finding with very high confidence, Heeger says -- in statistical terms, greater than five sigma, which translates to a less than a 1 in 3.5 million chance that the result arose by random chance.

The findings fill in a major gap in understanding neutrino oscillation and will provide important guidance for future neutrino experiments, including looking for nonstandard effects outside of current theories.

Under the guidance of U.S. chief project engineer Jeff Cherwinka, an engineer at the UW-Madison Physical Sciences Laboratory (PSL), the collaboration is now assembling the last two detectors and will install them this summer to increase data collection and improve precision. The UW-Madison PSL and Department of Physics have been involved in designing and building the detectors since 2006.

"What made this possible is that the detectors worked really well. We have a very strong technical engineering team with PSL, which led the onsite assembly and installation of the detectors. This allowed us to come online ahead of schedule and make these measurements so quickly," Heeger says.

The Daya Bay collaboration is jointly led by China and the United States, with additional participants from Russia, the Czech Republic, Hong Kong, and Taiwan.
