Updated today at 10:25 PM

CARROLLTON ? A well-known Dallas chef and restaurateur is dead following a tense standoff with police late Friday night.

Carrollton police said the suspect, 52-year-old Travis Henderson of Carrollton, had reportedly been involved in a family disturbance, was found in a car with a gun outside the Valley View Christian Church, 17601 Marsh Lane.

The Dallas police SWAT team was called in at 9:12 p.m. to try and talk Henderson into surrendering after the first units heard a noise believed to be a gun shot. Investigators said the suspect had indicated he had planned to harm himself.

Dallas police spokesman Lt. James Walton said Dallas police negotiators made contact with the suspect.? But then ? at 11:45 p.m. ? Henderson exited the car brandishing a handgun.

"A Dallas SWAT officer, fearing for his safety, discharged his firearm," Lt. Walton said in a written statement. "The suspect was struck and died at the scene."

Henderson was the longtime chef at Newport's Seafood in the Dallas West End and was owner of The Place at Perry's in Uptown Dallas. He left Perry's in 2010 and had been working as a restaurant consultant.

Debbie Henderson told News 8 her husband was a good man and a loving father who had struggled with depression for years.

"I wish I could have done more," she said.

Dallas police identified the officer who fired the fatal shot as SWAT Senior Cpl. Samuel McDonnold, and Dallas will be handling the investigation of the shooting.

Kodak _ and film _ saying goodbye to the Oscars

(AP) ? Each year at the Oscars ceremony, Hollywood says goodbye to stars and filmmakers who've died. This year, the award show will bid adieu to the Kodak Theatre.

Just a decade ago, the glamorous 3,300-seat venue was touted as the Oscars' first permanent home, but the 131-year-old Eastman Kodak Co. has forfeited its sponsorship of the venue as it struggles with bankruptcy.

The move symbolizes Kodak's fading star power in Hollywood. Although seven of the nine "Best Picture" nominees were shot on Kodak film, the industry's increasing use of digital editing and projection has ravaged the company's printing business.

About half of the world's commercial screens now show movies from digital projectors, and by some estimates, film reels will soon be a thing of the past.

"35-millimeter is coming to the end of its life," said David Hancock, head of film and cinema for research firm IHS Screen Digest. "In four years' time there will be no film printing business."

Kodak film has long been a favorite of cinematographers. But more and more movies are shot using digital cameras, and the notion of a "cutting-room floor" littered with celluloid scraps has given way to studios with computerized tools such as Avid Technology Inc.'s Avid DS and Apple Inc.'s Final Cut Pro.

At their peak, motion pictures accounted for more than 12 billion feet of film processing each year, enough to reach the moon and back five times, according to IHS. This year, IHS predicts film processing will shrink to about 4 billion feet as an increasing number of theaters receive their "films" by satellite or via hard drives delivered by courier.

"We no longer ship (film) to most theaters," Philippe Dauman, chief executive of Paramount Pictures owner Viacom Inc., told a conference last month. "We have helped them implement digital distribution so we don't have to make so many prints."

The billions of dollars that major studios save on film ? and its costly ingredient, silver ? has resulted in revenue declines for the Kodak division that once accounted for the vast majority of the company's overall revenue.

In the first half of 2011, revenue from the division that makes motion picture stock film was $763 million, about half the $1.57 billion it posted in the same period in 2008.

Film printing volume was crucial to Kodak. Although it takes about 1 million feet to shoot a feature film, studios need about 100 million feet to print enough copies for the widest of North American releases.

Kodak sees its future in commercial imaging devices and printing. Still, the motion picture business is significant, accounting for somewhere under a quarter of its revenues. The company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in January with $6.7 billion in debt.

Kodak is unable to afford the marketing boost the Oscars once gave it.

Last week, a bankruptcy court judge approved its early exit from a 20-year naming rights deal it signed with Kodak Theatre owner CIM Group in 1999. As a result, Kodak won't have to pay the $3.6 million annual naming fee.

The Kodak Theatre, which was custom-built for the awards show and first played host to the ceremony in 2002, will be described to millions of viewers on Sunday simply as the "Hollywood & Highland Center."

The judge's decision came too late to remove the signs outside, which may cast a sense of gloom over an industry already rocked by technological change.

"I think everyone looks at Kodak's name coming off the theater with a degree of sadness mixed with respect," said Chris McGurk, chief executive of Cinedigm Digital Cinema Corp., which installs digital projectors for thousands of movie screens and is getting into the business of putting live video feeds into theaters. "It's just that the tide has shifted. The digital rollout is moving great guns. It's unfortunate that the great companies that helped build the film business can't all be part of it going forward."

The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences, which declined to comment for this story, is reportedly considering a move to a different venue.

The Academy won't suffer financially from the unpaid fee, since it doesn't have a direct relationship with Kodak and most of its $100 million annual budget comes from licensing the Oscar ceremony's broadcast, according to Moody's Investors Service. The Academy leases the space from CIM Group.

It's not as if Kodak didn't see the digital future coming. Last October, Kodak licensed its patented laser projection technology to Imax Corp. to allow digital projectors to work in domes and other huge theaters that were once reserved for film.

Even if its name is gone from the Oscars, Kodak will still be a part of filmmaking, as long as Academy voters continue to pick movies with that rich, grainy "film look." Kodak stock film was used to shoot Oscar-nominated movies such as "War Horse," ''The Tree of Life," and "The Help," even though the captured images were converted for digital editing and delivery.

Mark Graziano, senior vice president of post-production at "War Horse" maker DreamWorks Studios, said the end of the sponsorship serves as a reminder of the "lost art" of film production, and of the workers who once had titles like "negative cutter." It used to take two weeks, for example, just to prepare a rough cut for studio executives to view in screening rooms. The process is nearly instantaneous now.

"It makes you nostalgic for the days when we only worked with 35-millimeter film," Graziano said, noting that film still has a place at many studios. "You look at many filmmakers that swear by film capture, their movies always look gorgeous. It's hard to turn your back on that."

Spann approached the vehicle and took a photo of Brown inside of the car, according to the report, when the "Look At Me Now" singer allegedly "reached though his car window and snatched her phone from her hands."

Brown allegedly told Spann, "B****, you ain't going to put that on no website," before grabbing the phone, putting his car window up and driving away, the report states.

On Thursday, a Miami Beach PD officer told Access Hollywood that Brown has not been arrested and as yet has not been charged, adding that the State Attorney's office is preparing the arrest warrant.

The alleged incident could mean more legal trouble for Brown, as he is still on probation for assault charges stemming from the 2009 beating of then-girlfriend Rihanna.

A rep for Brown was not immediately available for comment when contacted by Access Hollywood on Thursday.

A Science Miniseries: The Big Story of Alcohol, Civilization and a Little Fungus

There is a little magic embodied in every bit of bread or cheese and every sip of beer and wine. ??That magic is microbial and, at least in the case of the bread, beer and wine, the microbe doing the magic is yeast, of a single species, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, what one might reasonably call civilization?s yeast, or at least the yeast at the heart of civilization-its slightly sour lollipop center.

We don?t think about yeast. We buy it in packets at the store. We add water and wait. It is a creature akin to the sea monkeys you can order in the back of magazines, a sort of cheap novelty. Yet, yeast has long been, if not the bread and butter, at least the bread, beer and wine of agricultural peoples (which is to say, nearly all of us). Yeast, in many ways, saved lives (though it also takes them) and may even have been part of the reason we began to farm in the first place.

In a series of six articles published on the Guest Blog, I considered the story of yeast.

On day 1, I began by considering the possibility that alcohol (and within it yeast) may have been one of the reason crops were first planted, in part because in times of contagious disease and polluted water supplies alcohol might have helped keep us healthy.

On day 2, I next considered new research on fruit flies suggesting fruit flies do use alcohol as medicine, just as our ancestors might have.

On day 3, I found that unknown to those studying the fruit flies, it turns out a separate literature has considered whether alcohol kills human pathogens and, in turn, influences our fate, whether historically or even today.

On day 4, I began to consider the wicked side of fungi such as yeast. In thinking about the story of alcohol and yeast, we tend to think about having tamed yeast, in order to meet our needs. But in other stories in nature, for example that of termite balls, animal societies seem more likely to be tricked by fungi than in control of them. ?Fungi, like humans, can have ill intent.

On day 5, I wrote about the other societies we tend to think of as farming, all of which we tend to say ?farm fungi.? ?But in each of these cases, including our own, ?it is just as reasonable to say the fungus is farming the animals.

On day 6, I concluded by considering what remains to be understood in the story of fungi, alcohol and humans. In the end, if we are to carve the story of our interactions on the cave wall, the fungi need to be there. They are among our most important partners. They may even be in control.

These articles form part of the bigger story I?ve lost myself in over the last year or so, a story of our interactions with other species. These interactions not only influence us, they make us who we are. Yeast has shaped humans and societies, just as worms, bacteria, lions and many other species have too. ?Sister Sledge said it best when she sang, ?we are family, all my microbes, worms, predators and me.? Well, she did not sing it just like that, ?but she should have.

In working hard on a story like this one, a story that has required hundreds of hours of work, lost sleep and dreams filled with writhing worms and dividing cells, one begins to wonder what the end is (or when it ends?). I can?t precisely explain why I find these species so fascinating or why I feel I need to write about them. I can?t help myself. But I think there is precedent to my wanderings.

Here, I?ll return to the caves I was able to visit this week, deep caves in which, more than ten thousand years ago our ancestors made art. A hundred years of research has concluded resolutely that it is unclear why the early peoples of Europe and elsewhere painted caves, carved bison sculptures or made small sculptures of voluptuous women. This art was not easy. ?The artists crawled into caves as deep as they could and painted what was meaningful in one way or another to them. They did so using fire for light. They did so when they could have been running around playing pin the spear-head on the mammoth. Why? Maybe it was magic. Maybe it was religion. Maybe they did not know why they were doing it either. They painted similar subjects again and again, in different forms and from different directions. They painted them because for whatever reason they ?needed to.? I can?t explain why they painted the caves and yet I get it. ?The species with which we coexist make us human. They are who we are and so maybe that is what the cave artists were after, images of who they were, a kind of self-portrait a confrontation in those dark corridors with their existence. They were bisons, mammoths, reindeer, lions, and magic. We are those same things and also, bacteria, yeast, wheat and worms and thousands of other species, species I want to record, if not on the cave wall, at least on paper, so we will know who they, and we, are.o they were.

Immigration Is Increase The Population And Real Estate Values ...

Had you been aware that over 270,000 immigrants came to Canada in 2010 alone? Actually, it had been the highest number in practically 4 decades. It?s no surprise that Canada is expecting immigrants to comprise the greatest domestic growth for the upcoming 40 years. This now represents approximately two-thirds of the populace increase in this country.?

?

Human population replacement is nonetheless a concern in Canada even though ladies have had a lot more infants within the last ten years, the 1.66 babies per female continues to be beneath the 2.1 needed. A lot fewer newborns indicates that there won?t be enough tax payers to assist the maturing Canadians. Immigration will be needed to complete the void rendered through a shrinking populace.?

?

Vancouver, Montreal and Toronto have been the most well-liked metropolitan areas for a large portion of brand new immigrants. In the past, all of these places have grown more rapidly in comparison with the rest of Canada and the entrance of new immigrants points out why. Even so, throughout the last three years, the largest population increase fueled by immigration was experienced in smaller locations and increased the amount of Oshawa real estate listings available on the market as demand goes up. Saskatoon is heading the charge accompanied by Regina, Calgary and Edmonton. New immigrants are having an effect on real estate demand and they?re the biggest segment generating population growth in Canada. Despite the fact that the latest immigrants are more likely to lease than to own, this trend shifts through the years as their earnings increases and a lot more of them grow to be property owners.?

?

Within their first five years in Canada, a few immigrant groups have demonstrated bigger tendencies for house ownership than other individuals. As an example, people from Eastern Asia which consists of China and Japan, are four times more inclined to own their very own property within a couple of years of getting here. Conversely, Northern Africans arriving in Canada are far more prone to lease their flat for longer.?

?

New immigrants are not the only power for property desire in Canada. Senior citizens are additionally impacting the real estate market place. This particular portion in the populace is expected to double by 2036 while the rest of Canadians will grow eight times less quick. They are really turning out to be a driving force behind the growth in condominiums. In fact, seniors possess the highest amount of condominium ownership when compared with any other demographic. New developments in the Oakville real estate market are getting built with seniors as the primary goal with added support services and house modifications offered.?

?

With the typical age of Canadians climbing, the real estate industry will probably be intensely influenced by seniors and new immigrants similarly. They?ll grow to be the power guiding the desire for real estate, and will certainly continue to fuel the increase in condominium development.?
