Santorum: US wrong to condemn Iran scientist death (AP)

GREENVILLE, S.C. ? Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum said Saturday the U.S. was wrong to condemn the killing of an Iranian nuclear scientist this week.

The Obama administration's public posture on the death Wednesday of Mostafa Ahmadi Roshan does not reflect the hard line Santorum supports in keeping Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons, the former Pennsylvania senator said while campaigning in conservative upstate South Carolina.

"Our country condemned it. My feeling is we should have kept our mouth shut," Santorum told about 200 people packed into a popular breakfast diner in Greenville.

Santorum is vying to emerge as conservatives' alternative to former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney in the Jan. 21 South Carolina primary. Romney leads in public and private polls of likely voters, although former House Speaker Newt Gingrich is within striking distance, with a week to go before balloting begins.

However, Santorum has risen here since his breakthrough near-tie with Romney in the Iowa caucuses on Jan. 3. He has a robust state organization and is making aggressive inroads with evangelical conservatives, like many of those who were at the Country Ham House Saturday morning.

And while Santorum stresses values issues, he has also argued for a tough stand on Iran's nuclear capability. Responding to a question in Greenville, he said he supports missile strikes to stop its nuclear program, if Iran refuses to submit to inspections.

"If these are people who are developing a weapon to be used to either destroy the state of Israel or to spread terror ? a reign of terror ? around the world, we shouldn't be sitting on the sidelines and letting it happen," he said. "They cannot have a nuclear weapon, because you, in Greenville, will not be safe."

Santorum was scheduled to campaign later Saturday in the Charleston area.

Murdoch on MySpace: We "screwed up" in the race against Facebook

Rupert Murdoch today admitted that News Corp dropped the ball when it came to MySpace.?

In July of 2005, News Corp acquired MySpace for a whole lot of cash. ($580 million, to be exact.) And why not? The deal looked like a good one: At the time, MySpace was the most popular social networking site in the US, with a robust membership, and domination of rival network Facebook. Fast forward six years, and Facebook is now in the top slot, while MySpace ? beset by?corporate shake-ups, lay-offs, and general discontent ? is struggling to survive.?

None of which has been lost on Rupert Murdoch, chief of News Corp. In a tweet today from the floor of CES, in Las Vegas, Murdoch acknowledged that his company had taken some major missteps when it came to MySpace.?"Many questions and jokes about MySpace. Simple answer ? we screwed up in every way possible, learned lots of valuable expensive lessons," Murdoch wrote.?

So is Murdoch right to be chagrined? Well, over at Wired, John C. Abell says the News Corp acquisition of MySpace certainly belongs on "tech investment Wall of Shame." Still, Abell adds, in "fairness to Murdoch...?there is no shame in putting down big money for a company which, at the time, seems like the Big Dog as a way of accelerating your way into a fast-moving market which only seems to be going up."?

In related news, this week at CES, Justin Timberlake introduced a new venture between MySpace TV and Panasonic, the electronics manufacturer. Timberlake said the initiative would blend social media and TV watching ? CBS described it as "Hulu and Netflix with social networking." Timberlake, Horizons readers may remember, owns a minority share in MySpace, which was sold last year to an ad firm called Specific Media.?

"We're ready to take television and entertainment to the next step by upgrading it to the social networking experience," Timberlake said. "Why text or email your friends to talk about your favorite programs after they've aired when you could be sharing the experience with real-time interactivity from anywhere across the globe?"?

US video game sales drop 21 percent in December (AP)

LOS ANGELES ? U.S. retail sales of video game hardware, software and accessories fell 21 percent in December from a year ago to $3.99 billion as players bought fewer games for their aging consoles.

Microsoft Corp.'s Xbox 360 will turn 7 years old this year, while Sony Corp.'s PlayStation 3 and Nintendo Corp.'s Wii will turn 6.

Market researcher NPD Group says December sales of software ? the video games themselves ? fell 14 percent from a year ago to $2.04 billion.

That's a bigger decline than the 5 percent drop expected by analyst Doug Creutz of research firm Cowen & Co.

Airbus, Boeing top 1,000 deliveries in 2011 (Reuters)

PARIS (Reuters) ? The world's dominant planemakers scored new orders as Airbus put the finishing touches to a record 2011, cruising peacefully for now above debt turmoil and new airline cutbacks in Europe.

Airbus and its U.S. rival Boeing unveiled more than 70 orders for new aircraft worth $7.5 billion as industry insiders confirmed the trans-Atlantic rivals had delivered a combined total of more than 1,000 jetliners in 2011 for the first time.

The latest orders included confirmation of a 44-plane Airbus deal from Mexican low-cost carrier Volaris and an order for 10 Boeing 787 Dreamliners from an unidentified buyer.

The Volaris order will count toward a 2011 tally to be announced by the European manufacturer next week, putting it on course for well over 1,600 orders and a big win over Boeing, which sold 921, but has pledged to turn the tables in 2012.

Airbus will also announce that it delivered 534 aircraft in 2011, industry sources said, a record for the European manufacturer and a ninth successive victory over Boeing in the number of aircraft placed into service in a single year.

Civil planemakers have for the most part avoided the European debt crisis and warnings of contagion to other regions as urbanization in emerging markets drives transport growth.

Standard & Poor's said on Thursday the commercial aerospace industry was entering what could be a "prolonged period" of increasing deliveries.

Defense contractors and many sectors of the economy are bracing for the opposite, raising questions over the health of a high-tech supply base shared by several industries and the ability of airlines to get hold of funds to secure deliveries.

So far, the industry says dollars needed to pay for some $100 billion in annual aircraft deliveries will be available from other sources such as lessors and Asian lenders, though the debt crisis may undermine or delay a handful of deliveries.

In Europe, Air France-KLM said it would defer some deliveries of Airbus and Boeing jets including two European A380 superjumbos to help with a turnaround plan.

Air Asia X, a long-haul, low-cost offshoot of Airbus's largest Asian customer AirAsia (AIRA.KL), said it would close unprofitable routes to Europe and India.

"Aerospace companies are reporting large order backlogs and should benefit from new models despite the headwinds of a weak global economy, high fuel prices and the possibility of reduced availability of aircraft financing," S&P said in a note.

Industry sources disclosed last week that Airbus had exceeded its 2011 financial target of 520-530 aircraft deliveries.

Its record deliveries of 534 might have been two or three aircraft higher if it had not been for some last-minute snags.

Airbus declined to comment ahead of an annual presentation on January 17.

EADS (EAD.PA) unit Airbus overtook Boeing in deliveries of passenger jets with more than 100 seats in 2003. Planemakers are paid the bulk of an aircraft's value on delivery.

Boeing delivered 477 commercial aircraft last year, roughly in line with a target of around 480 deliveries.

Both leading manufacturers increased their deliveries to airlines by around 3 percent versus 2010, and have set out plans for record production of short-haul passenger jets to meet demand from emerging markets despite economic gloom in the West.

In 2012, the focus will be on ensuring enough financing is available to keep up the momentum after European banks scaled back a significant involvement in the dollar-denominated sector to help relieve pressure on overstretched balance sheets.

Sony reveals SS-AR2 loudspeaker, wants an invite to your next house party

Sony has been quite busy chatting up new products for 2012 here at CES. One of the new pieces of tech is the SS-AR2 loudspeaker that looks to keep the up the reputation of its elder sibling in the R-Series line, the SS-AR1. Maple from Hokkaido, an island in northern Japan encloses all the important components and contributes to the overall sound quality. The SS-AR2 is a 4-unit, 3-way vented standing tower that sports a frequency response ranging from 42kHz to 60kHz. Distortion is combated by positioning the bass reflex port in just the right to spot to allow a duo of woofers to drive without a hitch. Birch partitions on the interior construct a well-insulated cavity keeping the midrange and tweeters just the right distance apart from the bass section -- and all those tones neat and tidy. NO word on pricing on availability as of yet, but you'll want to start bench pressing phone books before picking one up, as each unit tips the scale at 84 pounds.

Perry distances self from dad's anti-semitic rant

Larry Busacca / Getty Images

Katy Perry's tweet may have seemed mysterious to some.

By Gael Fashingbauer Cooper

Over the weekend, Katy Perry tweeted "Concerning the gossip, I want to be clear that NO ONE speaks for me. Not a blog, magazine, 'close sources' or my family."

For confused fans who may not know what the singer was talking about, here's a good guess. Perry's dad, Keith Hudson, spoke last week at an Ohio church, and his remarks caused quite a stir.

According to Reuters, Perry's dad, himself an evangelist?preacher, said? "You know how to make the Jew jealous? Have some money, honey. You go to L.A. and they own all the Rolex and diamond places.?Walk down a part of L.A. where we live and it is so rich it smells.?You ever smell rich??They are all Jews, hallelujah! Amen.?

As you can imagine, the remarks, made at Westlake, Ohio's nondenominational Church on the Rise,?did not go unheard.

The Anti-Defamation League released a statement calling the remarks "unabashedly anti-Semitic" and while not attaching any blame to Perry herself,?went on to say?"it is unfortunate that her good name is now attached to her father?s words."

It's been a busy couple of days for Perry. She pulled out of Wednesday's People's Choice Awards despite being nominated for favorite pop artist and favorite female pop artist.

And the media has been buzzing about a YouTube video from November in which her now-estranged husband Russell Brand jokingly takes off his wedding ring?while discussing sororities at the colleges he was planning to tour.

Discovery Channel to air full 'Frozen Planet' series despite controversy

Discovery Channel announced its plans to air all seven episodes of their new documentary series?'Frozen Planet.' ?Before the announcement, rumors were circulating that the last episode would not be aired?because?it was about climate change.

Discovery?Channel's documentary series "Frozen Planet" will premiere March 18, and will encompass seven episodes including a program on climate change hosted by David Attenborough.

On that seventh episode, the famed British naturalist will investigate what rising temperatures will mean for the planet and life on it.

The network made the announcement Tuesday.

"Frozen Planet" is described as "the ultimate portrait of our Earth's polar regions." A co-production of Discovery?Channel and BBC, it was four years in the making and comes from the team behind "Planet Earth," the acclaimed series that aired on?Discovery?in 2007.

The "Frozen Planet" team filmed in every nation inside the Arctic and Antarctic Circles during 2,356 days in the field, 1 1/2 years at sea, more than six months on the sea ice and 134 hours beneath that ice, according toDiscovery.

Among the sights: the birth of an iceberg bigger than the largest building on Earth, a caterpillar with antifreeze in its veins and tiny baby polar bears, which at birth are 25 percent smaller than human babies.

"Frozen Planet" will be narrated by Alec Baldwin.

Discovery?and TLC networks head Eileen O'Neill calls the series remarkable "because it's so surprising. You see sequences that have never been captured on film before ? a world you would expect to see in a 'Narnia' film, not on this planet."

She adds, "You see an environment that's changing, if not disappearing, in our generation."

Bernard Fernandez: New Penn State coach makes good first impression

To hear Joyner tell it, Penn State has arms wide enough to embrace the occasional convert. And when the man who headed the six-member search committee charged with identifying the best fit as the Nittany Lions' new football coach peeled back a few layers of a candidate with no obvious ties to the school or Paterno, he thought he spotted something that superseded even a lack of an insider's blueblooded pedigree.

"I was looking for a Penn State heart," Joyner said, and he believes he found it beating in the chest of someone who hadn't played football for the Lions, coached under Paterno, or even set foot on this picturesque, central Pennyslvania campus until Friday night, when he was offered and accepted a job that many Penn Staters believe should have been reserved for one of their own.

Bill O'Brien, 42, offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for the New England Patriots, was introduced Saturday morning at the Nittany Lion Inn as the first full-time coach of a program that had been entrusted to Paterno since 1966, or 3 years before O'Brien was born. And while no one in the packed room heckled him, it is safe to say that the reception was mixed, at best.

How many media types in the audience already had editorialized that O'Brien lacked the gravitas (he has never been a head coach at any level) to take on one of America's highest-profile college coaching jobs? How many members of the Football Lettermen's Club had criticized the hiring of someone they felt couldn't possibly understand what being a Penn Stater is all about? Why couldn't Joyner and the other members of the Gang of Six just stay in-house and promote interim coach Tom Bradley, a Penn State alum with 33 years of service as one of JoePa's most loyal and trusted lieutenants?

Facebook photo upload on WebOS

I noticed today that I actually can't add pictures to my checkins not like iOS and Android versions. I played around and investigated a few options and seems like some things not working very well with FB on webOS in terms of photo upload. Here is what I found:

Veer:
I can't upload pics via the camera app - just shows a notification the photo is uploading but never completes
I can upload pics via the facebook app but I can't add photos to my checkins (no option)
Using x.facebook.com and m.facebook.com I am unable to upload photos. When I click <choose file> nothing happens.

Touchpad:
Pretty much the same thing, except that there is no option to upload pics via the camera app at all.

Is it the same for you guys? Any known work around?
