Real battle in New Hampshire primary is for No. 2, and it's getting fierce

Mitt Romney has a 20-point lead heading into Tuesday's GOP in New Hampshire, polls show. But more than one-third of likely GOP voters there are undecided, intensifying the race for second.

All that was missing was a crown, as GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney returned to New Hampshire Friday, after a foray to South Carolina, to be met by cheers and by supporters who jammed into a spaghetti dinner here to welcome him back.

This is Romney country, and the question is not whether the former Massachusetts governor will win Tuesday's New Hampshire primary, but by how much. That removes some of the suspense that the nation experienced last week in Iowa, where Mr. Romney edged out former Pennsylvania senator Rick Santorum by a mere eight votes.?

Barring a surprise in the back-to-back GOP presidential debates on Saturday and Sunday, the New Hampshire primary is all about who snags second place.

?Whoever comes out of New Hampshire No. 2 will be able to call it a victory, because Romney is running against his own expectations,? says Wayne L?Esperance, a political scientist at New England College in Henniker, N.H. ?

On his second run for the presidency, Romney leads his GOP rivals in the Granite State by at least 20 percentage points, according to latest polls. A recent CNN poll also has Romney up by 18 points in South Carolina, the first Southern primary, to be held Jan. 21.

Romney aides insist that the New Hampshire primary is not a coronation. ?Our strategy from the start was to earn it. Our mantra is to run like we?re three votes down with three minutes to go,? says New Hampshire coordinator Jim Merrill. ?

Yet from the start, Romney Inc. has cultivated an aura of inevitability, claiming to be the only campaign capable of going toe to toe with President Obama and his $1 billion war chest. Indeed, the Romney camp's early display of organizational clout and funding helped to deter several big GOP names, among them Gov. Mitch Daniels of Indiana and US House Budget Committee chairman Paul Ryan of Wisconsin, from entering the race.?

Minus Texas Gov. Rick Perry, who opted out of the New Hampshire contest, most of the remaining GOP candidates are scrambling to emerge from New Hampshire as the conservative alternative to Romney ? or, at least, with enough momentum to continue the fight in South Carolina and Florida.

Samsung N Service unveiled at CES: Time Warner Cable, DirecTV, Comcast and Verizon onboard

Well, what have we here? Looks as if Samsung's cooking up quite the content partnership here at CES 2012, with Verizon, DirecTV, Time Warner Cable and Comcast (at least) onboard. From a content creation standpoint, NBC Universal is evidently signed on to crack open its coffers and let the material pour fourth, and we're guessing we'll hear of quite a few more once the announcement gets official. As of now, the so-called N Service looks to be one that'll enable select pay-TV subscribers to stream content onto Samsung devices -- hopefully whilst far, far away from home. At least for FiOS TV users, those who take advantage of N Service will be able to "access live streaming FiOS TV channels, as well as Flex View commercial movies and TV shows from one's Samsung Smart TV or Blu-ray player." It'll obviously work with multi-room households, too. Have a peek at the detail shots below, and keep it locked right here as we learn more.

Motorola launches MOTOLUXE and DEFY MINI Android sets (video)

CES hasn't even officially gotten underway and Motorola's already launching not one, but two handsets for the Greater Chinese, European, and Latin American markets. First off we have the higher end of the two, the not quite new Motorola MOTOLUXE -- which we've already seen in China as the XT615 and more recently in the hallowed halls of the FCC -- packing a 4-inch display, 8 megapixel camera with flash, and a nifty lit lanyard slot on the front for email, text, and voicemail notifications. The least dynamic of this duo is the dust-proof, water-resistant, Gorilla Glass-toting DEFY MINI. This downmarket set features a 3 megapixel cam, 3.2-inch display, and a relatively beefy 1650 mAh battery that touts 10 hours talk and 21 days standby time. Sadly there was no mention of pricing, but both devices are slated for February availability in the aforementioned markets. Video and PR after the break.

Study finds age-related effects in MS may be reversible

Friday, January 6, 2012

Scientists at Joslin Diabetes Center, Harvard University, and the University of Cambridge have found that the age-related impairment of the body's ability to replace protective myelin sheaths, which normally surround nerve fibers and allow them to send signals properly, may be reversible, offering new hope that therapeutic strategies aimed at restoring efficient regeneration can be effective in the central nervous system throughout life.

In a proof-of-principle study published in the journal Cell Stem Cell, the researchers report that defects in the regeneration of the myelin sheaths surrounding nerves, which are lost in diseases such as multiple sclerosis may be at least partially corrected following exposure of an old animal to the circulatory system of a young animal. Myelin is a fatty substance that protects nerves and aids in the quick transmission of signals between nerve cells.

Using a surgical technique, the researchers introduced an experimental demyelinating injury in the spinal cord of an old mouse, creating small areas of myelin loss, and then exposed those areas to cells found the blood of a young mouse. By doing so, they found that the influx of certain immune cells, called macrophages, from the young mouse helped resident stem cells restore effective remyelination in the old mouse's spinal cord. This "rejuvenating" effect of young immune cells was mediated in part by the greater efficiency of the young cells in clearing away myelin debris created by the demyelinating injury. Prior studies have shown that this debris impedes the regeneration of myelin.

"Aging impairs regenerative potential in the central nervous system," says author Amy J. Wagers, PhD, an associate professor of stem cell and regenerative biology at Harvard University and Joslin, who co-led the study with Professor Robin Franklin, director of the MS Society's Cambridge Centre for Myelin Repair at the University of Cambridge. "This impairment can be reversed, however, suggesting that the eventual development of cell-based or drug-based interventions that mimic the rejuvenation signals found in our study could be used therapeutically."

This could be particularly useful, she adds, in treating MS, which typically spans many decades of life, and thus is likely to be influenced by age-dependent reductions in the ability of myelin to regenerate. In MS, the body's own immune system attacks the myelin sheath and prevents nerve fibers in the brain from sending signals properly, which can cause mild symptoms such as limb numbness or more serious ones like losing the ability to walk or speak. As people with MS age, remyelination decreases significantly, eventually causing permanent loss of nerve fibers.

"For MS sufferers," says Franklin, "this means that, in theory, regenerative therapies will work throughout the duration of the disease. Specifically, it means that remyelination therapies do not need to be based on stem cell transplantation since the stem cells already present in the brain and spinal cord can be made to regenerate myelin, regardless of a person's age."

Upcoming Google tablet takes aim at Kindle Fire: report

A Google tablet is on the way. But it is aimed at the Kindle Fire or the iPad?

Back in December, Google exec Eric Schmidt announced that Google was close to releasing its own tablet computer ? possibly a tablet branded with the Nexus moniker.?"In the next six months we plan to market a tablet of the highest quality,"?told the Italian newspaper Corriere della Sea,?according?to the UK Telegraph. That announcement meshed well with a long-simmering rumor:?That Google and LG had partnered to build a tablet.?

At the time, the assumption was that Google would be going after the corner of the market currently dominated by the Apple iPad (in other words, high-end). But now DigiTimes, a Taiwanese tech site, is alleging that Google could instead be gunning for the Kindle Fire, the budget tablet released last fall by Amazon.?

Citing anonymous sources from "Google's upstream supply chain," DigiTimes speculated that a Google tablet ? armed with Android 4.0 software ? will hit in either March or April. The price? Less than 200 bucks, so as better to compete with Amazon. (The Kindle Fire retails for $199, meaning, as we noted recently, that Amazon actually loses money on every Kindle Fire it builds.)

So is the scuttlebutt for real? Well, typical caveats apply: Google is remaining mum, and although DigiTimes is well sourced, the site has been wrong before. That said, many tech bloggers seem willing to believe the DigiTimes report, if only because Google ? long a holdout in the tablet game ? seems well-poised to introduce a Kindle Fire (or iPad) competitor.?

Over at PC World, Daniel Ionescu breaks down the possible routes for a Google tablet.?

"The tablet market represents a slightly different challenge for Google than the smartphone market, where Android has already won (in sales)," Ionescu writes. "Google can either pursue Apple?s model to produce high-end tablets, where the biggest profits are, or it could pursue the media tablet market, where Amazon is?taking a loss?on the hardware and hopes to profit from sales from its content ecosystem, including movies, music, books and apps."

About one in four Philadelphia Catholic schools to shut (Reuters)

PHILADELPHIA (Reuters) ? Roughly one in four Catholic schools in the Philadelphia area will be shuttered at the end of this academic year, hit by falling enrollment and rising tuition costs, the archdiocese said on Friday.

The closing of 44 of the 156 grade schools and 4 of the 17 high schools serving 68,000 students was announced by Archbishop Charles Chaput at a news conference to release recommendations by a school review commission.

"No archbishop and no administrator ever wants to see a school close," said Chaput, the leader of the nation's sixth largest Catholic diocese, with 1.5 million Catholics. "But we can't afford to fool ourselves."

Smaller family size, increasing tuition costs and alternative forms of education such as charter schools were blamed for a 72 percent drop in enrollment since 1961 when there were 250,000 students in the system, said commission member Edward Hanway.

The shutdown of some schools and consolidation of others in the five counties around Philadelphia means an estimated 250 elementary school teachers and 50 high school teachers will lose their jobs, said Mary Rochford, superintendent of the Catholic school system.

Ritz Schwartz, head of the Association of Catholic Teachers, expressed disappointment.

"I thought we were more than about the bottom line," Schwartz said.

The plan was live-streamed on the archdiocese website. Outraged parents immediately posted their opposition to it on a Facebook page called Catholic Parents Respond.

"First the archdiocese makes a mockery of our faith and now adds insult to injury by closing schools which will make it very hard and in some families impossible to choose Catholic education," one parent wrote on Facebook.

Hanway said the current enrollment of 68,000 students is the same as the schools recorded in 1911. He said the average gap between tuition and actual cost is $1,500 per student.

The average first-child tuition is $3,000 per year for elementary schools and $5,600 per year for high schools, with siblings paying less, Rochford said.

Commission chairman John Quindlen said the move spelled an "immeasurably brighter" future for the remaining schools.

"Today is the first day of the future," Quindlen said. "I think we are about to grow again."

The blue-ribbon commission was appointed in December 2010 by Chaput's predecessor, Cardinal Justin Rigali, who retired in July after suspending dozens of priests being investigated in a child sexual abuse scandal.

Thousands of US Troops To Be Deployed in Israel?

How did this one slip in under the media radar (pun intended)?

From the Jerusalem Post 12/20:

Israel is moving forward with plans to hold the largest-ever missile defense exercise in its history this spring amid Iranian efforts to obtain nuclear weapons.

Last week, Lt.-Gen. Frank Gorenc, commander of the US?s Third Air Force based in Germany, visited Israel to finalize plans for the upcoming drill, expected to see the deployment of several thousand American soldiers in Israel.

This is not the first example of US military presence on Israeli soil. Back in 2008, it was reported that 120 US military technicians and advisers were permanently in Israel to help operate a new early-warning radar system that was designed to ward of a potential Iranian missile attack.

But the deployment of ?several thousand American soldiers? in Israel is something else entirely. Could there be any more ominous sign of the ?special relationship? between these two military-industrial juggernauts?

BTW, shortly after this report was issued, the chief of the Mossad publicly stated a nuclear Iran would not pose an existential threat to Israel. And still the drumbeats grow ever louder.

This one hasn?t trickled down to the mainstream media yet and clearly needs more independent confirmation. But for those hoping against hope that 2012 would be a more peaceful year, I?d say things are off to a pretty dismal start?
