Why 2012 could be the year we find a habitable planet

Other than the one we're currently living on, that is. As discoveries of alien planets accelerates, the discovery of an "alien Earth" could be just over the horizon.?

While 2011 was a huge year for alien-planet discoveries, 2012 could bring something even more exciting: the first true "alien Earth."

This year saw the tally of confirmed exoplanets top 700, with NASA's Kepler space telescope flagging thousands of additional candidates that still need to be verified. And just this month, Kepler scientists announced two landmark finds ? the?first two Earth-size alien planets, as well as a larger world in its star's habitable zone, that just-right range of distances where liquid water (and possibly life as we know it) could exist.

These and other recent discoveries suggest that the prized quarry of many exoplanet hunters ??an "alien Earth"?? could be just over the horizon. In fact, such a planet may well pop up in the next round of Kepler candidates, which should be released next year, researchers said.

"I'm guessing that this next planet catalog is going to see, finally, some numbers of points that are really, truly Earth-sized and in the habitable zone," said Natalie Batalha, deputy leader of the Kepler science team at NASA's Ames Research Center in Moffett Field, Calif. "That's something that I really look forward to, is getting those candidates." [Vote Now! Most Intriguing Alien Planets of 2011]

The year has seen a huge increase in the?number of known exoplanets. At the start of 2011, astronomers had confirmed 528 alien worlds, according to the Extrasolar Planets Encyclopedia, a database compiled by astrobiologist Jean Schneider of the Paris-Meudon Observatory.

Less than one year later ? and just 16 years after the first alien planet was found orbiting a sun-like star ? the count now stands at 713. And thousands more are waiting in the wings.

On Dec. 5, Kepler scientists announced the discovery of?1,094 new exoplanet candidates, bringing the mission's total tally in its first 16 months of operation to 2,326. So far, just 33 of these potential planets have been confirmed by follow-up observations, but researchers have estimated that at least 80 percent of them will turn out to be the real deal.

These huge numbers are exciting by themselves, but the search for alien planets isn't really about increasing the tally. Rather, it's a quest to better understand the nature and?diversity of alien worlds, researchers say.

"You can only understand the diversity of systems if you have enough numbers that speak to the statistics," Batalha told SPACE.com. "You really want a large sample, and that's where Kepler's going to make a huge contribution."

The diversity of alien worlds and systems appears to be high. Astronomers have found one planet as light and airy as Styrofoam, for example, and another as dense as iron. And in September, the Kepler team announced the discovery of an?alien planet that circles two suns, like Luke Skywalker's home planet of Tatooine in the "Star Wars" films.

Funnily enough, I finished playing Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood just before I saw this was up, and I've been on something of a Western binge lately... I'll have something up within the next few days, but it might take some time, seeing as it's the holidays. Either way, can't wait!

How Astronauts Celebrate Christmas in Space (SPACE.com)

The six astronauts aboard the International Space Station can't come home for the holidays, but they're doing their best to make the season bright hundreds of miles above Earth's surface.

The spaceflyers have decked the halls of the $100 billion orbiting lab, and ? like many of us Earthbound folks ? they plan to celebrate Christmas with a party and a feast.

"We've already put up decorations, and we've gathered together all the cards and gifts that our friends and families have sent to us, and we're planning a couple of big meals," NASA astronaut Dan Burbank, commander of the space station's current Expedition 30 mission, said last week. "That'll be great."

Skeleton crew no more

Burbank and two cosmonaut colleagues, Anton Shkaplerov and Anatoly Ivanishin, had been holding down the orbital fort by themselves until Friday (Dec. 23).

On that date, they were joined by three new crewmates, who arrived aboard a Soyuz spacecraft two days after launching from Kazakhstan's snowy Baikonur Cosmodrome. [Holidays in Space: An Astronaut Photo Album]

The addition of American Don Pettit, Russian Oleg Kononenko, and Dutchman Andre Kuipers brought the space station back up to its full strength of six crewmembers. The three newcomers will contribute some Christmas cheer to the festivities, but little in the way of actual presents.

"In terms of gifts, when you're off in the frontier, you're not going to waste upmass on something like that," Pettit told SPACE.com in a preflight interview.

Despite those mass constraints, a fair bit of holiday flair has made it up to the orbiting lab since NASA and its international partners began building the 431-ton structure in 1998. There's even a two-foot-tall artificial Christmas tree beneath which a present or two can be wedged.

Christmas in space

The holidays can be tough for people separated from their friends and family ? and zipping around the planet 240 miles (386 kilometers) above your seven billion fellow Earthlings imposes a special kind of separation.

But Burbank said he and his other crewmembers don't feel too lonely or isolated.

"In a very real sense, we're not far from those who care about us," he said. "For one thing, we have hundreds of people worldwide in control centers watching over us and our space station 24/7. And we also know that our families and friends are thinking about us and supporting us every step of the way."

Besides, if the crewmates ever start feeling down, there's always that amazing view out the window.

"Our planet is so beautiful, peaceful and serene when you look at it from space ? the most beautiful holiday card you could imagine," Burbank wrote Dec. 17 on the astronaut blog Fragile Oasis.

Military Dad Surprises Daughter for Christmas

LEAVENWORTH, Kan. ? A Leavenworth soldier has been away for most of his daughter?s life after two deployments to Iraq and nearly five years in the army. Captain Jim Breneman had a surprise for his little girl and the timing couldn?t be better.

Sienna Breneman is just four-years-old. This year, she made out her own Christmas list for the first time. The first thing on her list was to have her daddy home from Iraq. Her list also included a drum set and a unicorn.

?She did it all on her own this year,? Sarah Breneman, Siena?s mom said.? ?She wanted to do her own Santa list and she put Daddy on there.?

Her dad has been in Iraq more than he?s been at home in the past few years. She?d expect to see Santa walk into her pre-school before she?d expect to see her dad in military fatigues. She got a big surprise on Wednesday when here dad showed up in her class!

?I missed you so much,? Sienna said.

She says she?s very happy to have her dad home for Christmas. Sarah Breneman says her husband was gone when their daughter was born and he?s missed two of her four birthdays.

?I take a ton of pictures,? said Sarah Breneman. ?People make fun of me because I take so many pictures but it?s so I can show? him everything that he?s missed.?

Capt. Jim Breneman said he?s glad to be home.

?You know, I?ve been gone for 22 total months in Iraq, and actually able to be home be here to watch her grow up is going to be great,? Capt. Breneman said.

Siena may not get that unicorn, but two out of three on her her list isn?t bad.

Capt. Breneman is home for the holidays but in January he goes back to Ft. Hood until March when his five year service ends. The he?ll come back to Leavenworth for good.

What the payroll tax 'fiasco' will cost the GOP: 5 theories (The Week)

New York ? Republicans are getting hammered for their bungling of the payroll tax cut extension. How badly will it hurt the GOP going into an election year?

House Republicans are on the verge of "caving" to the Senate and White House in a bruising fight over extending the popular payroll tax holiday, which expires Jan. 1, says ABC News' Jonathan Karl. At this point, House Republicans are just scrambling "for a face-saving way to give up" and accept the two-month extension agreed to overwhelmingly in the Senate. Whatever the House does, though, it will likely be too late to erase the damage Republicans have inflicted on themselves. Here, five theories on how the payroll tax fight will affect the GOP:

1. The GOP is handing the 2012 election to Obama
"GOP Senate leader Mitch McConnell famously said a year ago that his main task in the 112th Congress was to make sure that President Obama would not be re-elected," says The Wall Street Journal in an editorial. But given the hash he and House Speaker John Boehner made of this tax fight, "they might end up re-electing the president before the 2012 campaign even begins in earnest." The standoff has already given Obama a poll boost, and it's also hurting his potential 2012 rivals, says Joshua Green in The Boston Globe. "They are all scrambling to win over the conservative base," so some are siding with the unpopular House payroll tax revolters ? a stance that could haunt them next year.

SEE MORE: 'Zombie Obama': A GOP group's 'disgusting' email

?

2. And control of Congress to the Democrats
It's not just Obama "in a stronger re-election position" because of the GOP's bungling, says The Wall Street Journal editorial. This "payroll tax fiasco" is also making the already-unpopular GOP-controlled House even more loathed, and "the chances of Mr. McConnell becoming Majority Leader in 2013 are declining." If this chaotic and sloppy House-Senate GOP communication breakdown continues next year, we're headed for "the return of all-Democratic rule."

3. Republicans have lost their key advantage on taxes
Maybe the worst casualty for Republicans is the loss of their "strongest and only remaining brand advantage: Tax cuts," says Martin Longman at the?Booman Tribune. What's shocking about how this has played out, says Derek Thomson at?The Atlantic, is that Obama actually conceded a lot to Republican in the Senate bill, and he's still "somehow put the party of tax cuts in the position of walking out over a broad tax cut." This debate is as much about winning as it is taxes, and Republicans aren't just losing this round, "they are losing their own debate."

SEE MORE: Payroll tax fight: Has Boehner lost control of the GOP?

?

4. And they're losing the middle class
It's certainly "a reversal of the customary positions" for Democrats to be united and Republicans divided over a tax cut, says Green in The Boston Globe. So it looks especially bad for the GOP that its "sudden reluctance involves a tax cut that broadly benefits the middle class rather than the rich." Voters are noticing. Obama's recent five-point approval bump in a CNN poll was from big gains in the middle class, and a new ABC poll has Obama not only beating Republicans on taxes, 46-41 percent, but also killing them on who voters trust to protect the middle class, 50-35 percent.?

5. Hold on. Republicans will win this in the end
"None of the obvious storylines to come out of this latest congressional skirmish look all that good for Republicans," says David Weigel at?Slate. But the GOP is very good at getting the "policy sweeteners" it wants, even if it takes a short-term political hit. "The cynic's bet is that the story of GOP dysfunction won't matter" in the end. All the House Republicans have to do is wait for the Democratic side to blink, "and it always does," especially when their president is up for re-election.

Graphic shows holiday retail sales figures

(AP) ? The holiday shopping season is wrapping up to be bigger than anyone expected. Now, retailers are holding their breath and hoping consumers will keep spending in the final days before Christmas.

Sales from November through Saturday rose 2.5 percent, compared with the same period a year ago, according to research firm ShopperTrak, which did not give a dollar figure. Online, shoppers have spent almost $32 billion online for the holiday season so far, a 15 percent increase from a year ago, according to comScore, which tracks Web use.

The increases are good news for retailers, but they're not out of the woods just yet. The final week before Christmas, which includes four of the top 10 holiday shopping days, can account for up to 20 percent of sales for the season.

"I don't think anybody has claimed victory yet, but very few are writing concession speeches," said Arnold Aronson, managing director of retail strategies at consulting firm Kurt Salmon. "This Christmas will not be a blowout, but despite all the nervousness about the economy, it will be a decent Christmas."

This is the most important time of year for retailers. They can make between 25 and 40 percent of their annual sales in the last two months of the year. And this holiday season, stores are expected to ring up $469.1 billion during the holiday season, according to the National Retail Federation, nation's largest retail trade group.

Heading into the holidays, retailers were nervous that Americans were so scared about another recession that they wouldn't do much shopping. In fact, consumers themselves told consulting firm Deloitte in September that they planned to spend about 5 percent less on Christmas this year.

That led stores to panic. They began discounting earlier in the season, opening as early as Thanksgiving Day, and offering profit-busting incentives, including free shipping on clothes and juicy financing deals on furniture.

Despite all the worrying, though, the season has been a lot brighter than expected.

At Taubman Centers, which operates 26 malls in 13 states, retailers' year-over year sales on average are up mid-single digits through last weekend. Mall of America, North America's largest shopping center, has also seen "healthy" increases in customer counts and sales, said spokesman Dan Jasper. And Stephanie Sack, the owner of a clothing boutique and shoe store in Chicago, said business has improved.

"People in my world are still shopping," Sack said.

As a result, the National Retail Federation recently upgraded its forecast for holiday sales to increase 3.8 percent, up from its 2.8 percent forecast in October. Such an increase ? below last year's 5.2 percent spike over 2009 ? would still be above the 2.6 percent average gain over the last 10 years. ShopperTrak also raised its forecast to a 3.7 percent increase in sales, up from its estimate of 3 percent before the season started.

There's a reason for the renewed confidence. After all, Americans spent $52.4 billion alone over the four-day weekend starting on Thanksgiving. It was the highest total ever recorded for that period, according to the NRF.

Shoppers appear to be more willing to spend this holiday season after having cut back during the weak economy.

Lynn Vance, for one, was excited to shop this year after landing a new job at a clinical research firm. Vance, 36, said she and her friends were struggling with recession fatigue, itching to mark the occasion after years of contending with the economy's downturn.

"Last year, I was unemployed," Vance, who lives in Chicago, said. "This year, I have money and I want to share my happiness with others ... I think you can only say crouched in the position of uncertainty for so long, eventually have to act."

Still, retailers are cautiously optimistic. After all, shoppers still are very budget-conscious and are looking for bigger discounts. In a poll of 1,000 shoppers by America's Research Group ahead of the holiday shopping season, 78 percent said they were more driven by sales than they were a year ago. During the financial meltdown in 2008, that figure was only 68 percent.

"Shoppers are waiting for prices to plunge," said Brian Sozzi, an independent retail analyst.

They're also more likely to have buyer's remorse this year: For every dollar stores take in this holiday season, they'll have to give back 9.9 cents in returns, up from 9.8 last year, according to the NRF's survey of 110 retailers. In better economic times, it's about 7 cents. That's a big deal because fractions of pennies can add up quickly when you're talking about millions of dollars.

"The consumer is cautious and thoughtful and very responsive to discounting," said Richard Jaffe, an analyst at Stifel Nicolaus. "That's what makes retail managers nervous."

Indeed, Lindsay Gaskins, CEO of Marbles: The Brain Store, said the 18-location chain that sells games and puzzles has done well during the season. Still, she's cautious about the remainder of the season.

"I think people are ready to buy," she said. "But it's still a bad economy."

Case in point: Marisa Pinto of Kearney, N.J., spent $600 at Old Navy, Toys R Us and Wal-Mart over Thanksgiving weekend on gifts for her fiance's two young daughters. But she's run out of money, so she decided to pay only half of the total due on her monthly bills to free up another $300 to buy a gift for her fiance.

"I went through most of the money I had saved," the 28-year-old corrections officer said. "I am having trouble finding money for the rest."

Report: UK police need clearer riot tactic rules (AP)

LONDON ? An official British police watchdog says officers should consider using more robust tactics ? including shooting arsonists as a last resort ? if faced with future riots.

Tuesday's report, by Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Constabulary, follows deadly riots that erupted in London on Aug. 6 and spread to other English cities.

The group calls for clearer rules of engagement so police know what range of tactics are allowed. It says water cannons and plastic bullets should be an option. It also says police could shoot arsonists as a last resort if they attack commercial buildings linked to homes.

Some lawmakers and police groups have said such tactics could inflame violence.

A lawmakers' committee concluded Monday that riots spread in part because too few police were on the streets.

Matt Damon to President Obama: Grow a Pair!

Matt Damon is at it again. Rekindling one of our favorite on/off A-list celebrity feuds, the actor is calling out President Barack Obama for his lack of balls.

His words.

The We Bought a Zoo star discussed his views on Obama during an interview with Elle, lambasting the President's perceived leadership shortcomings.

Matt Damon HairstyleThe President of the United States of America

"I've talked to a lot of people who worked for Obama at the grassroots level. One of them said to me, ‘Never again. I will never be fooled again by a politician.'"

"You know, a one-term president with some balls who actually got stuff done would have been, in the long run of the country, much better."

Ouch. But it continues ...

"If the Democrats think that they didn't have a mandate - people are literally without any focus or leadership, just wandering out into the streets to yell right now because they're pissed off," he says. "Just imagine if they had a leader."

Rough. Not the first time he's called out Barack, or likely the last, although him squaring off against a Republican next year might shift Matt's perspective.

In May, Obama used some of Damon's previous comments as material for his speech at the White House Correspondents' Dinner in Washington, D.C. (below).

"I've even let down my key core constituency: movie stars. Just the other day, Matt Damon - I love Matt Damon, love the guy - Matt Damon said he is disappointed in my performance. Well, Matt, I just saw The Adjustment Bureau, so, right back atcha, buddy."

It seems like We Bought a Zoo, the actor's latest film, is getting decent reviews, so we can't wait to see what the president's comeback is this time.

Damon, for his part, says he will not run for the White House - not that he hasn't been asked. Michael Moore has pushed for this, as a matter of fact.

Your thoughts: Damon for President?
