Marco Rubio Says ?No? to Vice President, Talks Immigration

U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) clamped down on VP rumors, telling reporters he was ?not going to be the vice presidential nominee? for the Republican Party. Speaking at the Washington Ideas Forum at the Newseum in Washington, D.C., he provided advice to his fellow Republicans on the complicated immigration issue, saying the GOP can?t be ?the anti-illegal immigration party.? Rubio was also asked about the Univision GOP debate controversy.

Discussing the Vice-presidential rumors, ABC?s The Note reported:

When asked? Rubio repeated twice for emphasis, ?I am not going to be the Vice Presidential nominee. I am not going to be the Vice Presidential nominee.?

Asked during the forum if he would turn down an offer if the Republican presidential nominee asks him to, Rubio responded, ?Yea, I believe so,? adding again, ?the answer is gonna be no.??

?I?m not focused on that,? [Rubio] said. ?I don?t crave it. I wanted to be a United States Senator. I didn?t run for the Senate as an opportunity to have a launching pad for some other job. I think one of the things that I lament is that people somehow come to the conclusion that United States Senator is not enough. Listen, the United States Senate is still an important, I think very important institution.?

With immigration becoming an ever-present issue during the GOP Presidential primary, Rubio offered his Republican colleagues some advice on the issue. He warned Republicans to pay attention to their tone and to not have primary focus on immigrants who entered the country illegally. The Huffington Post reported:

?We cannot be the anti-illegal immigration party. We have to be the pro-legal immigration party,? [Rubio] said. ?We have to be a party that advocates for a legal immigration system that?s good for Americans, good for America and honors our tradition both as a nation of immigrants and as a nation of law.?

Immigration has become a main issue in the GOP Presidential Primary, to the disappointment of many Hispanic Republican and GOP leaders. Many worry the GOP may squander a unique opportunity to connect with Latino voters who are disillusioned with President Obama, are suffering through high-unemployment and are looking for a Presidential candidate that will improve the economy.

Mitt Romney has attacked Texas Governor Rick Perry for supporting legislation in 2001 that provides in-state tuition for some of Texas? undocumented students.? In 2003, as a member of the Florida legislature, Marco Rubio supported legislation that would have provided in-state tuition for a limited number of undocumented students. The Florida legislation failed. He continues to be supportive of a state-based legislation (with limits) but not in favor of a federal DREAM Act.? Rubio has refused to address if he agrees with Perry or Romney on the in-state tuition issue, only telling reporters, ?Rick Perry had a bill in Texas. We had a different bill in Florida.?

[Rubio] said, as he has in the past, that he does not believe all undocumented students in the United States should receive in-state tuition at public colleges and universities, arguing that there should be exceptions for young people who are in the country without documents ? through no fault of their own ? and are outstanding students.

?There are instances of young people who have something to contribute to America?s future, and I believe the vast majority of Americans would like to be able to accommodate them. My greater point, which I hope wasn?t missed, was that it?s become harder and harder to do that as this issue?s gone unresolved, and people have become less supportive of those measures,? he said.

The St. Petersburg Times reported that Rubio also said:

?As a general rule,? Rubio said, ?people in the United States who are here without documents should not benefit from programs like in-state tuition.? He said carve-outs, while a worthy objective, have become harder to justify?.

?He sketched a scenario where a small child is brought to the country illegally by his parents.

?These kids have grown up here their entire lives, they?re 18 now and they can?t go to college,? he said. ?Now here?s the rub: If that kid is 6-foot-7 and can dunk a basketball or throw a 95 mph fast-pitch, we?re going to find a way to keep them, right? But if the kid has a 4.0 GPA, you?re going to deport him? So people look at that and say, ?Well maybe we should find a way to accommodate that.? ?

Rubio declined to comment on the GOP Presidential candidates who have decided to boycott a proposed Univision debate due to allegations that the Spanish-language network unethically pursued a story about Rubio?s family, proposing to soften the piece if the senator appeared on its Al Punto show.

?The whole thing is something I really don?t even want to comment on ? I know you have to ask, but I really don?t want to address the whole issue. I really don?t want to give that thing any oxygen,? Rubio said.

Poll: 1 in 3 vets sees Iraq, Afghan wars as wastes (AP)

WASHINGTON ? One in three U.S. veterans of the post-9/11 military believes the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan were not worth fighting, and a majority think that after 10 years of combat America should be focusing less on foreign affairs and more on its own problems, according to an opinion survey released Wednesday.

The findings highlight a dilemma for the Obama administration and Congress as they struggle to shrink the government's huge budget deficits and reconsider defense priorities while trying to keep public support for remaining involved in Iraq and Afghanistan for the longer term.

Nearly 4,500 U.S. troops have died in Iraq and about 1,700 in Afghanistan. Combined war costs since the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks have topped $1 trillion.

The poll results presented by the Pew Research Center portray post-9/11 veterans as proud of their work, scarred by warfare and convinced that the American public has little understanding of the problems that wartime service has created for military members and their families.

The survey also showed that post-9/11 veterans are more likely than Americans as a whole to call themselves Republicans and to disapprove of President Barack Obama's performance as commander in chief. They also are more likely than earlier generations of veterans to have no religious affiliation.

The Pew Research Center, a nonpartisan organization that studies attitudes and trends, called the study the first of its kind. The results were based on two surveys conducted between late July and mid-September. One polled 1,853 veterans, including 712 who had served in the military after 9/11 but are no longer on active duty. Of the 712 post-9/11 veterans, 336 served in Iraq or Afghanistan. The other polled 2,003 adults who had not served in the military.

Nearly half of post-9/11 veterans said deployments strained their relationship with their spouses, and a similar share reported problems with their children. On the other hand, 60 percent said they and their families benefited financially from having served abroad in a combat zone. Asked for a single word to describe their experiences, the war veterans offered a mixed picture: "rewarding," "nightmare," "eye opening," "lousy."

There are about 98,000 U.S. troops in Afghanistan, where the conflict began with a U.S.-led invasion on Oct. 7, 2001. Obama campaigned for the presidency in 2008 on getting out of Iraq and ramping up the military campaign in Afghanistan. He is on track to have all U.S. troops out of Iraq by the end of this year, and in July he announced that he would pull 10,000 troops out of Afghanistan this year and 23,000 more by next September.

The Pew survey found that veterans are ambivalent about the net value of the wars, although they generally were more positive about Afghanistan, which has been a more protracted but less deadly conflict for U.S. forces. One-third of post-9/11 veterans said neither war was worth the sacrifices; that was the view of 45 percent in the separate poll of members of the general public.

Fifty percent of veterans said Afghanistan was worth it, whereas the poll of civilians put it at 41 percent.

Among veterans, 44 percent said Iraq was worth it. That compares with 36 percent in the poll of civilians.

Of the surveyed former service members who were seriously wounded or knew someone who was killed or seriously wounded, 48 percent said the war in Iraq was worth fighting, compared with 36 percent of those veterans who had no personal exposure to casualties.

Exposure to casualties had an even larger impact on attitudes toward the war in Afghanistan. Fifty-five percent of those exposed to casualties said Afghanistan has been worth the cost to the U.S., whereas 40 percent of those who were not exposed to casualties held that same view.

Pew said its survey results found "isolationist inclinations" among post-9/11 war veterans. About 6-in-10 said the United States should pay less attention to problems overseas and instead concentrate on problems at home. In a Pew survey conducted earlier this year, a similar share of the general public agreed.

The survey also reflected what many view as a troublesome cultural gap between the military and the general public. Although numerous polls have shown that Americans hold the military in high regard, the respondents in the Pew research acknowledged a lack of understanding of what military life entails.

Only 27 percent of adult civilians said the public understands the problems facing those in uniform, and the share of veterans who said so is even lower ? 21 percent.

Strategic Internet Marketing For New Online Businesses | Grow 2 Rich

Wednesday, October 5th, 2011 at 3:08 am ?

Small Business Marketing

Do you know the secret of successful businesses today? Aside from having a creative mind as the business owner, you have to use effective systems running within your business to make it successful. You need to be aware of these strategic internet marketing systems they use to constantly improve their business processes and stay on top of competition. I can say this from experience. A guy named Richard Bandler setup something called neuro linguistic programming and how one can use it to improve these people running their own businesses. I went up to the States and visited Florida to attend that seminar with Richard because I really want to learn more about these techniques from him.

I began to be controlled by lots of his MP3s. I quickly put a target on my mind. I said, I?m likely to go train with this particular guy. I want to study with someone, I like to gain more knowledge directly from the source. You will find a lot of interesting things this way plus it just gets filtered down. Personally now I can say that I have learned these valuable lessons in studying this through the years.

Among the stories he told was about how sound business systems work. He used an excellent example to illustrate his point. He compared good spellers to bad spellers. A bad speller will attempt to produce sounds to spell out words. They will sit there and say c-a-t. That actually works effectively for straightforward words, but this will not be applicable anymore if you are trying to spell longer and challenging words. It?s an ineffective system of spelling these words when you think about it.

He interviewed lots of small children. He went to some of those spelling bees and asked the very best spellers, can you explain the exact method you use in spelling these words? In business, this is where you need to apply strategic internet marketing for your small business internet marketing projects to succeed especially if you are aware of it.

Each of the kids had a very similar answer. They said, I visualize the word, I see the word. It?s about this high, it?s in front of my eyes and I just read the letters. So their system for the way they spell was more of a visual thing. They remember the word, they have the word, they see the visual and then they repeat what it is that they could see. They don?t try and sound it out, they read it as they can see it. Often they could spell the word just as easily forwards as they could backwards because they had and used a different strategic internet marketing system, a different way in which they approached the world.

This obviously got Richard?s attention, he thought, this is really quite interesting especially if you are going to apply these business techniques in offering SEO services. Then he started to do some work for the military. The military wanted him to help people shoot better. He went to Olympic shooters and asked them, how is it that you shoot that target so perfectly every time, when you?ve got these other people who might be miles off?

Multiple Mayhem Mamma: Musings on Managing Motherhood: The ...

There are so many new kiddie flicks that come out regularly these days, and with the recent emphasis on 3D movies and special effects, I find myself waxing nostalgic and reminiscing the days of my youth where watching a movie, especially at home on TV, was a special treat. As much as we all may enjoy the incredible special effects that the newer films offer, many of the children's movies of a bygone era are irreplaceable.

Many of us have "Movie Nights" in our homes. Watching the daily fare on the tube doesn't hold a candle to getting a prime spot on the couch with your kids, some popcorn and your favorite children's film to make it an evening to remember. That being said, I will go out on a limb and admit that I personally dig the classic children's movies more so than the more recent offerings. I don't know what it is but I find them much more magical and thought-provoking. Sure, I've enjoyed some of the neat effects and futuristic story lines of the past few years but nothing can hold a candle to Judy Garland chanting "There's no place like? home," and other goodies.

To that end, here are my picks for the top 10 classic children's movies of all time (in my humble opinion).

The Top 10 Classic Children's Movies of All Time

1) The Sound of Music (1965) - The hills truly were alive when Julie Andrews created the character of Maria in this timeless and beautiful film about the Von Trapp family. From the breathtaking scenery to the unforgettable music to the touching storyline about the Von Trapp family children, this film has it all.

?2) The Wizard of Oz (1939) - Who could forget Dorothy's ruby slippers and her determined quest to make her way back to Kansas? How about the Wicked Witch of the West? The Tin Man, the Scarecrow and the Cowardly Lion round out a cast of characters that make this gem from 1939 a must-see classic.3) E.T. (1982) - This heartwarming story of a stranded alien who forms a close relationship with a little boy is one that the whole family will enjoy. An early front-runner of the then-emerging computer graphics-based movie (CG) genre made this movie particularly compelling. Enjoyable for both the kids and the parents.4) Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (1971) - No explanation necessary for this one. I mean, mounds of candy in every shot, the fantasy of access to every treat that your heart desires, oh, yeah, and the plot. Your kids will love it.5) Charlotte's Web (1973) - A doomed pig and his true arachnid friend. Sounds like a bizarre basis for a movie, but it works. Despite the sad reality that is at the core of the story, this animated musical has all of the elements that make a movie memorable: solid plot, well-developed characters and entertainment value, among others. Warning: it's a tearjerker.6) Pinocchio (1940) - The story of a hopeful wooden puppet who longs to become a "real boy" touches the hearts of young and old alike. I still remember being a child and the feelings evoked when Jiminie Cricket sang "When You Wish Upon a Star" to Pinocchio. This story is timeless and the film stands up to many modern children's movies that are not half as imaginative.

7) The Red Balloon (1956) - This film made a lasting impression on me when I saw it as a young girl. I can still remember the myriad of feelings and emotions that it evoked, in spite of the movie's simple premise. One of the best movies for kids ever (video below).
8) The Parent Trap (1961) - Hayley Mills stars as herself - times two - as identical twin girls who are dealing with their divorced parents. Touching and entertaining, this film is so much better than the 1998 Lindsay Lohan version.9)Mary Poppins (1964) - When Mary Poppins sings "A spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down," you actually believe her. Who wouldn't want a nanny like this one, sugar, umbrella, flying abilities and all? This is one great family flick that will remain a classic for years to come.

10) Miracle on 34th Street (1947) - Okay, it's a holiday flick, but that doesn't take away from the fact that a young Natalie Wood steals the show in this wonderfully touching movie. It makes you believe in Santa Claus all over again.?
So there you have it - some great movies to watch, curled up on the couch with the kids. Stay tuned for The Top 10 Modern Children's Movies of All Time coming soon!

Top Republican praises Obama for strike on cleric (AP)

WASHINGTON ? The Republican chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee says the killing of an American-born cleric in Yemen is a "tremendous tribute" to President Barack Obama and the U.S. intelligence community.

In a statement, New York Rep. Peter King says the killing of Anwar al-Awlaki is a great success in the fight against al-Qaida and its affiliates. King says that in recent years al-Awlaki has been more dangerous than Osama bin Laden.

U.S. counterterrorism officials said that Al-Awlaki was killed early Friday in a strike on his convoy in Yemen. Officials say the attack was carried out by a joint operation of the CIA and the U.S. Joint Special Operations Command.
