Is that a 3D prototype in HTC's EVO 4G LTE making of video? (update: nope)

Image
An HTC Evo 4G LTE with dual cameras could only mean one thing, right? It's unclear whether the 3D rig in the company's intro video is simply a design mock-up, or a functional prototype of a model to come, but there's definitely something of the sort floating around HTC's labs. The device in question looks identical to the Evo we saw at yesterday's Sprint launch event -- kickstand and all -- save for that unique dual-lens design. And if such a smartphone did come to fruition, what could we expect for a name? Sprint HTC EVO 4G 3D LTE? We sure hope not. We've reached out to HTC to get a better idea of what we're looking at, but for now, this clip will have to do. You'll find the video in its entirety just past the break, but you'll want to skip to the 25 second mark for the 3D proto.

Update: Well, we just heard back from HTC and the company confirmed that it's not a prototype of any future device. Apparently, it's just an early design when HTC and Sprint were considering carrying over the 3D feature, but it didn't make the cut. Mystery solved!

Planning a sporting holiday? Insurance is always a good idea

?

Where once holidays seemed like a luxury for the higher echelons of society nowadays it seems going abroad is something that is now an affordable option for everyone. Flights used to be considerably more expensive than they are now, however the past few decades have seen the prices slowly drop in a bid for the consumers' business. But many of the airline companies have began finding alternative revenue sources to compensate for their losses on the actual flight prices, for instance the dreaded excess baggage fees that catch out many travellers on a regular basis.

?

So with these new cheaper flight prices bringing the option of travelling abroad to a far wider market than ever before it seems that people are finding more and more reasons to go abroad, rather than the standard summer time sight seeing holiday.

And with the 21st century educating people further about their bodies and how to keep healthy it seems that the idea of a sporting holiday is becoming increasingly popular amongst a growing number of people. So whether your preference is golf, diving, climbing, snowboarding or diving there?s bound to be a place abroad that?s ideal for you.

?

When planning a sporting holiday abroad there?s quite a lot that you need to remember, obviously there?s the standard checklist that would be necessary for any holiday; your passport, your plane tickets, converting your money, getting insurance and so on. But unfortunately there is even more to take into account when you?re planning holiday for sporting activities, for starters you have to remember far more things to pack when you begin including all your equipment, then there is of course the excess baggage fees.

And though you may have regular travel insurance there?s no doubt that you?ll want to cover yourself for any eventuality.

?

Making sure that you have full insurance coverage for any activities you?ll be doing abroad is essential for a number of reasons. Firstly there is the issue of medical bills, failing to take out an insurance policy that covers you for your sport can leave you liable to pay fairly substantial medical bills, which no doubt is the last thing that you?d want to have to think about after you?ve already injured yourself whilst on holiday. As well as injuring yourself there is also the chance that you might injure someone else, which again, can leave you in an undesirable financial situation. And finally there is also the chance that you?re equipment may become damaged, lost or stolen.

Precipitation impacts glacial melt, Patagonian Glacier study suggests

ScienceDaily (Mar. 30, 2012) ? Glaciers play a vital role in Earth's climate system, and it's critical to understand what contributes to their fluctuation. Increased global temperatures are frequently viewed as the cause of glacial melt, but a new study of Patagonia's Gualas Glacier highlights the role of precipitation in the glacier's fluctuation.

The study, conducted by S?bastien Bertrand of Renard Centre of Marine Geology, Ghent University (Belgium) and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) and his colleagues, reconstructs a 5,400 year-record of the region's glacial environment and climate, comparing past temperature and rainfall data with sediment records of glacier fluctuations and the historical observations of early Spanish explorers.

The study was published March 15 in the Open Access journal Climate of the Past.

As glaciers fluctuate, retreating or adding mass, they dramatically affect the water cycle -- locking up fresh water as they amass, causing the sea level to rise as they thaw and retreat.

"Improving our understanding of the impact of climate changes on glacier variability is one of the most pressing aspects of present-day climate research," says Bertrand, a postdoctoral fellow in WHOI's Marine Chemistry and Geochemistry department and the Renard Centre of Marine Geology, University of Ghent.

The focus of the work is Gualas Glacier, a 32-kilometer long shifting mountain of ice with an area of 119.2 square kilometers that sits above Golfo Elefantes. It is part of the Northern Patagonian Icefield (NPI), a series of 70 glaciers fed by precipitation that originates in the Pacific Ocean and falls in the rain belt west of the Andes, reaching levels of up to ten meters a year. The majority of the western NPI glaciers have retreated over the last 150 years.

"These glaciers are retreating as a response to global climate change, but not only because of increasing temperature, which is generally cited as the cause of worldwide glacier retreat," said Bertrand. "The fast retreat of Gualas, and other western NPI glaciers, during the last century, seems to be driven by a decrease in winter precipitation -- snow -- rather than by an increase in temperature."

The study constituted the first effort to use glaciomarine sediments -- sediments transported by glaciers or their meltwater to the marine environment -- from the fjords of Northern Chilean Patagonia to reconstruct Holocene glacier fluctuations, reaching back 5,400 years. After analyzing a sediment core gathered in the central basin of Golfo Elefantes during a 2005 cruise aboard the icebreaker Nathaniel B. Palmer, the scientists reckoned that over five millennia the glacier had seen three major periods of advance. Once this picture was assembled, it was compared with data on regional temperature and precipitation to determine which factor most impacted Gualas Glacier.

Two high resolution sea-surface temperature records were used as temperature indicators, and pollen records demonstrated precipitation levels. Examining these, the scientists discovered trends in the pollen/precipitation levels that corresponded to the fluctuations seen in the glacier, while the temperature levels were less influential, suggesting the glacier was mostly affected by precipitation.

In addition to the geological record, the study incorporates the observations of early Spanish explorers, beginning with Antonio de Vea in 1675. Spanish explorers documented their voyages to Patagonia, noting what they saw, and omitting what they didn't -- or couldn't -- see. Using the explorers' maps and descriptions of Patagonia's fjords, Bertrand and his colleagues pieced together the life-story of Gualas Glacier. Through studying these historical documents, the scientists determined that Gualas Glacier has retreated nine kilometers over the last 110 years, including 2.5 km during the last 25 years.

Although this study reveals the glaciers west of the Andes are controlled by precipitation, Bertrand says that glaciers on the eastern -- leeward -- flank of the icefield may be controlled by temperature.

"It needs to be tested if we are to understand and better predict the impact of global climate change on Patagonian glaciers," he said. He added that glaciers located in other maritime environments might also be driven by changes in precipitation rather than temperature.

The idea to use historical documents came from team member Fernando Torrej?n, an historian with the University of Concepci?n (Chile) who specializes in extracting climate and environmental information from written and iconographic documents. Bertrand recalls, "I knew his work on some Chilean glaciers, such as San Rafael, so I asked him to participate in this study to complement the results from the sediment cores."

Torrej?n plumbed the records of the 17th-century Spanish explorers archived at the library at the University of Concepci?n and the National Library of Chile, in Santiago. His contribution added an interesting historical component to the study and confirmed the interpretation of the geological/sediment record.

Head of 'faster-than-light' neutrinos team resigns

Italy's National Institute of Nuclear Physics said Friday that Antonio Ereditato had stepped down from the leadership of the OPERA experiment, whose measurements on the?speed?of neutrinos were widely questioned when they were announced in September.

The scientist who headed a European research team that last year measured particles traveling faster than?light?has resigned, weeks after a rival team cast doubt on the accuracy of those readings.

Italy's National Institute of Nuclear Physics said Friday that Antonio Ereditato had stepped down from the leadership of the OPERA experiment, whose measurements on the?speed?of neutrinos were widely questioned when they were announced in September.

Ereditato confirmed his resignation to The Associated Press in an email but declined to comment further.

The OPERA team itself had cautioned in September that the measurements needed to be checked by independent researchers because they appeared to go against a key tenet of modern physics ? that nothing can travel faster than?light.

Breaking that rule, which underlies Albert Einstein's famous special theory of relativity, could have opened the door to a new kind of physics in which time travel and warp?speeds?might be possible.

In February, the OPERA team acknowledged that it had found a flaw in the technical setup of its experiment that could have affected the measurements, but held off on calling them wrong.

Then, earlier this month, a rival team called ICARUS clocked neutrino?speeds?using a different experiment and found they behaved just as expected. They traveled at, but no faster than,?light?speed.

OPERA, ICARUS and two other teams will try to settle the issue once and for all by conducting further tests at the European Organization for Nuclear Research, or CERN, in May.
