Woz: Windows Phone is 'beautiful,' Android no 'contest,' still loves iPhone, ask again tomorrow

When Steve Wozniak talks mobile, people love to listen. Last time we checked in, he was lauding some of Android's finer points, and now he's raining praise on Windows Phone. In an interview with A New Domain, the Apple co-founder was all too happy to share his recent positive experiences with the Espoo / Redmond collaboration. In particular, Woz waxes about how intuitive the interface is, and how naturally apps lead you around. He goes on to say how there's nothing he's seen that isn't more beautiful (than iOS and Android) on the Windows system, before claiming Android is "no contest" when it comes to the interface. It's not all lemonade and roses, however, as he then admits he's no fan of the voice control functionality compared to the other two platforms. When pushed to admit what he uses as default, it's still the iPhone -- two of them in fact -- but Woz's ability to see the best in all mobile operating systems will be sure to further confirm his status as one of tech's most liked. Head down to the source to hear for yourself.

Seoul, South Korea, set list heavy on new material, but Gaga's biggest hits come out to play.
By John Mitchell

Lady Gaga kicked off her hotly awaited Born This Way Ball at Seoul, South Korea's Olympic Stadium on Friday (April 27) in front of 45,000 fans, and despite protests from Christian groups saying Mother Monster was "obscene" and could "taint" young people with her performance, the concert appears to have gone on without incident.

Intrepid Twitter fans are already showing off pictures and video of the BTW Ball's enormous Gothic castle backdrop and myriad costume changes, making it clear that Gaga has outdone even her own Monster Ball in terms of spectacle.

While we wait for reviews to trickle in from halfway around the world, one thing is certain: No minors were corrupted at the show. Earlier this month, the Korea Media Rating Board decided to elevate the age rating for the concert from 12 to 18, prohibiting minors from seeing the concert. When the board notified Gaga's tour promotion company and a sponsor of the change in age restrictions, it did not offer a reason why the show — which at the time was still in rehearsals and had not been reviewed publicly — was considered unsuitable for children under 18.

The likely catalyst for the board's decision came more into focus as the concert neared and protests from a group of conservative Christians calling itself the Alliance for Sound Culture in Sexuality ramped up. The group covered Seoul with posters accusing Gaga of "spreading unhealthy sexual culture" through "lewd lyrics and performances."

The superstar and her fans, however, were undeterred. Though she tweeted her hopes that the Korea Media Rating Board would reverse its decision (it didn't), she continued on as planned. Many fans reportedly arrived at the show wearing versions of Gaga's most well-known flamboyant costumes, and there have been no reports of disturbances at the concert.

Before the show, Gaga tweeted, "I can you hear you Korea. I'm shaking."

Gaga's performance was heavy on material from her Born this Way album, though her biggest hits, including "Bad Romance," Poker Face" and "Just Dance," were represented.

Lady Gaga's Born This Way Ball set list:

» "Highway Unicorn"
» "Government Hooker"
» "Born This Way"
» "Bloody Mary"
» "Bad Romance"
» "Fashion of His Love"
» "The Queen"
» "Just Dance"
» "Love Game"
» "Telephone"
» "Just Dance"
» "Heavy Metal Lover"
» "Bad Kids"
» "Hair"
» "Yoü and I"
» "Electric Chapel"
» "Americano"
» "Poker Face"
» "Scheiße"
» "The Edge of Glory"
» "Marry the Night"

Apple and Samsung set to meet May 21st, hug it out over 48 hours

These two brawlers were given until July to come together and mediate over their numerous globe-spanning patent lawsuits, but it appears neither side needs to wait that long. According to Foss Patents, May 21st and 22nd have been circled on the calendar of a certain San Francisco courthouse, where Magistrate Judge Joseph C. Spero will attempt to arbitrate in a calm, soothing voice for two days straight. Presenting himself as a confidant who sits outside of the main litigation being conducted in San Jose, Spero has already asked both parties to open up and provide "candid" statements about the strengths and weaknesses of their own cases, as a first step towards identifying areas of compromise. Fortunately, he still has a few weeks in which to devise further cunning plans.

Blood matching that of missing Marine wife Brittany Dawn Killgore has been found in the car of the chief suspect in her murder, according to new reports.

Killgore was found dead near a lake in Riverside County. Staff Sgt. Louis Ray Perez and Jessica Lynn Lopez were arrested and charged with murder.

Killgore was supposed to be going out for the evening with a Marine Corps sergeant and his girlfriend until the night of April 13 took a frightening turn.

Brittany Dawn Killgore Photo

"She sent a text to a female friend of hers indicating that she was in distress," San Diego Deputy District Attorney Patrick Espinoza said Thursday in court.

"She was missing from that point on."

The first details about the investigation came out at Perez's arraignment in Vista, Calif., where the prosecutor revealed the aforementioned text message.

More significantly, officials also stated that police found Killgore's blood in Perez's car as well as a weapon. Authorities have not revealed a possible motive.

Perez's attorney told the judge that Lopez, who had been found with self-inflicted cuts in a motel room, left a suicide note admitting to Killgore's murder.

Both Lopez, 25, and Perez, 45, have pleaded not guilty to all charges. Killgore, the estranged wife of another U.S. Marine, was only 22 years old.

'Our Mindless movement is all about being confident, just being yourself,' Battle of the Boy Bands hopefuls tell MTV News.
By Kelly Marino

The first round of MTV News' Battle of the Boy Bands has officially ended, but there is still time for fans to cast their votes for their favorite heartthrob group in hopes to title them the ultimate boy band of all time.

Another group urging their biggest followers to vote for them are the guys from Mindless Behavior. But before you get mindless with your votes, here are some facts about the foursome that might help steer your mind in the right direction:

Highest Chart Achievement
Their single "Mrs. Right" featuring rapper Diggy Simmons reached #8 on the U.S. Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop charts after its 2011 release.

Defining Tune
The guys confess they would travel the world just to find the right kind of girl in the beat-popping hit "Mrs. Right," causing female hearts in every country to flutter.

Standout Video
During their pledge to search high and low for "Mrs. Right," the boys get a lesson or two in geography from their teacher, Professor LL Cool J. Directed by Brett Ratner, the video also features Mike Epps as the school janitor, who joins in on the fun during a pep rally to cheer on Diggy Simmons and the group's signature dance moves.

Debut Album
Their debut album, #1 Girl, hit the U.S. in September 2011, debuting at #7 on the Billboard 200 with 36,000 copies sold in its first week.

Biggest Competition
Despite all of their success, the boys weren't afraid to admit who they thought might be their biggest competition amid the new wave of boy bands that has exploded on the scene. "As far as other boy bands who I feel [are] our biggest competition is One Direction and the Wanted," Roc Royal told us. "That's a huge competition for us, because we all have different movements, and they come from the U.K., and they also have fans out here, which, they have a lot of fans out here, so it's crazy."

So why do the guys think they should win our Battle of the Boys Band? Well, it's simple, really: "There's a lot of boy bands in the poll, but we're definitely unique," Princeton stated. "So please vote for us."

Ray Ray chimed in: "I think we should win the title for Best Boy Band of All Time because we have a great movement. Our Mindless movement is all about being confident, just being yourself, not caring what other people think, stopping all the bullying and, one, we're really great artists. We have songs that anyone can listen to. That's why I think we should win."

"And we love all of the fans," Princeton added.

When it comes to learning the key to becoming a great boy band, the group even filled us in on a little secret the Backstreet Boys once told them while on tour together: "When we were on tour with the Backstreet Boys, the advice that they gave us was 'Stick together no matter what,' " Ray Ray shared. "They said: You might have arguments here and there, but just stick together. You have to become family although you're in a group. You have to literally become family, and you got to stick together."

Voting in round two of MTV's Battle of the Boy Bands runs until noon ET on Monday, April 30. Winners are determined by fan votes, so if your favorite band made the cut, make sure you keep voting. Tune in to AMTV and MTV Hits for their boy-band video takeovers each day and make sure to spread the word on Twitter using the hashtag #BBB and like us on Facebook for updates!

Luckily, another event called the Indie Developer Lab has been put together for the same time (June 11 - 14) and only a few blocks away from the Moscone Center at The Box (it's fancier than it sounds). Tickets are considerably cheaper at $100/day as an early bird special, compared to $1600 for the whole four days at WWDC.

We have definitely seen our share of robots and crossing guards, but we almost never really see a combination of the two. An application filed by Samsung today at the US Patent & Trademark office seems to suggest that at least some people have been thinking long and hard about bots helping humans conquer the mean streets of our cities using a multitude of on-board tech -- from infrared and proximity sensors -- to devices enabling wireless communication between traffic lights and other robots. According to the application, the machines could inherit the traditional reflective properties often associated with crossing guard attire -- you know, the perfect guise for keeping their true intentions concealed.

The Distro Interview: Microsoft Principal Researcher Bill Buxton

Bill Buxton has spent most of his career getting between humans and computers. While his initial focus was on music and digital instruments, that eventually led to an interest in human-computer interaction, and pioneering work with multitouch systems and other user interfaces. He worked with the famed hotbed of innovation Xerox PARC in the late 1980s and early 90s, and was later Chief Scientist for software firm Alias Wavefront before claiming the same title at SGI Inc. when that company acquired the former in 1995. After a time running his own Toronto-based design and consulting firm, he moved on to Microsoft Research in 2005, where he continues to serve as the organization's Principal Researcher.

We recently had a chance to pick his brain and get his thoughts on a range of issues, including state of design at Microsoft, the future of natural user interfaces, and whether we're really entering a "post-PC" era.

Now, however, thanks to a method that spoofs the activation server, you can unlock almost any iPhone semi-permanently. The system, called Subscriber Artificial Module or SAM, requires a jailbroken iPhone and Cydia. To run it, you de-activate your phone, insert a new SIM, and then activate SAM. SAM spoofs the activation process, convincing the phone that it has been unlocked properly and without issues.

Boeing 787 Dreamliner completes first Trans-Pacific passenger flight, lands in Boston as JAL 8

We've been fortunate enough to hitch a ride on Boeing's 787 within the Land of the Rising Sun, but now the Dreamliner has hopped the Pacific with passengers on board, departing Tokyo Narita and landing at Boston's Logan International Airport around noon on Sunday. The JAL service marks New England's first Asia route, enabled by the 787's efficient design which lets airlines fly to lower-demand cities without wasting fuel on empty seats. The 787 will be making the 6,869-mile journey four times a week through May 31st, at which point daily service will begin, with flight 7 departing Boston at 1:20PM and arriving in Tokyo at 4 the following afternoon. Passengers on flight 8 will leave Tokyo at 11:30AM and land in Boston at 11:20AM on the same day. This is likely to be your best opportunity to ride a US-bound Dreamliner until United begins service later this year, so hit up the source link to get your fix, priced upwards of $1,500 for dates throughout the summer.

Sat, 21 Apr 2012 20:49:12 -0700 Joe Fiveash, President of Vertical Acuity ... - Small Business Trends http://rodneydiego.posterous.com/joe-fiveash-president-of-vertical-acuity-smal http://rodneydiego.posterous.com/joe-fiveash-president-of-vertical-acuity-smal

Bloggers are well aware that creating content can be a very demanding and even costly task. Writers block, nothing new and interesting to inspire you, the time involved to conduct proper research and create something useful to your readers and the cost involved to employ freelance writers. These are familiar obstacles to bloggers. The good news is that there is an easy and affordable solution available and in this interview, Joe Fiveash, President of Vertical Acuity joins Brent Leary to share it.

* * * * *

Joe Fiveash, President of Vertical AcuitySmall Business Trends: Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?

Joe Fiveash: I started in the Internet world in 1994 and in one weekend, went from being a lawyer to being the first sales guy for an Internet company called Landmark Communications that used to own The Weather Channel until it was sold.

Small Business Trends: Wow! ?So now you help people leverage content to build a presence in getting people to notice them. ?Can you talk a little bit about that?

Joe Fiveash: I worked at The Weather Channel. ?I ran the interactive site of weather for about six or seven years and did a lot of deals to get our content out and a lot of deals to get other peoples content into our site ? but it was hard. They were manual, there were plan rides, negotiations, contracts, and it was very difficult.

The platform we?ve built allows websites to partner with each other on top of our web platform. ?So if Boston.com wants to get Inc. content into their site, all they have to do is click a button. ?So long as Inc. said yes. ?Then the content starts flowing in.

Scribit, which is a product we launched last week, allows company websites to bring in content from all over the web to display on their site to share through social media channels. When they share it and somebody clicks on it, they come back to the customer?s website to read the article, because that is where the article is published.

Small Business Trends: So this is a service where a small business could sign up and start leveraging the content from major content?

Joe Fiveash: That is exactly right. What if I wake up every morning and say:

?I was supposed to put something on my web site. ?I was supposed to tweet something. ?I was supposed to put something on Facebook. . .and I do not have anything to say.?

What we do is give you an interface where you can go search millions of articles, grab some great stuff, put it on your website, Tweet it and put on your Facebook page.

Small Business Trends: You have made business arrangements with the content providers. ?So if a small business becomes a Scribit customer, they are able to basically pick and choose what type of content they want to place on their website, without having to worry about any issues?

Joe Fiveash: That is exactly right. It is fully licensed content. If you are a financial planner and you want content from Income Magazine, Forbes, Motley Fool, and Business Insider on your site, you can?t really call them and do a deal with them. They are not set up to do that. ?But through Scribit, we have done those deals and now we can pass those deals on to our customers.

Small Business Trends: How quickly can a small business get content onto their website?

Joe Fiveash: It takes about 15 minutes. ?It is a self-service product. If you go to Scribit.com and sign up for the 30-day free trial ? you do not put in a credit card ? you get to configure the widgets that display the content going onto your site.

There is a Wysiwig editor that lets you make those widgets look exactly the way you want them to look and we push out a piece of code that you put on your site. ?Then you?re done. I watched it done right after we launched it in ten 10 minutes.

Once the article is on their site, then they can tweet links and put links to that content on Facebook. ?The same way you put links to things anywhere. ?Except now they are coming back to your site to read this article.

Small Business Trends: Have you been able to measure the impact this kind of service has had on some of your customers?

Joe Fiveash: I can be on Google Analytics and I can watch visitors come to my site when I tweet something. I can see the visitors go up on Google Analytics so, that is exactly what we are trying to produce.

Small Business Trends: Is this is for companies of any size?

Joe Fiveash: That is exactly right. Anybody that wants to use content as part of their marketing strategy. We think this is an important missing piece in the content marketing ecosystem.

If you want to be interactive with the people that are following you and your fans, and the people that are coming to your website, it is really hard and expensive to produce that much content. That is where we see us fitting in as coming on top of that original content to provide interesting and timely, topical stuff.

Small Business Trends: So this is a way to enhance what you can do personally with some great content from around the Web?

Joe Fiveash: That is right. ?Then the starter package, once you do the free trial, is $50 per month. ?That gives you access to all of the content in the database. There are millions or articles so when you think of the cost of producing one article versus having access to this buffet of articles, we think it is a very efficient way to get access to a lot of very good content.

Small Business Trends: Where can we lean more about your service?

Joe Fiveash:?Go to Scribit.com.

All Critics (94) | Top Critics (36) | Fresh (83) | Rotten (11)

Bully is less a checklist plan for eliminating abusive behavior than an emotionally powerful wake-up call for a society too long in denial.

Bully" is smart and compassionate about the pain of its wounded subjects and the frustration felt by their parents, seemingly abandoned by the system. What the powerful film lacks is insight into bullying.

Hirsch seldom gets face time with any bullies or their parents, and he tends to ignore the complicated social and psychological patterns that feed the problem.

It would have been nice if the film had reflected its title a bit more and looked at the bullies themselves - what drives one kid to torture another? Is it a reaction to home life, is it fear, is it innate awfulness?

"Bully" doesn't need research or great filmmaking or narrative focus, per se. It needs only the shaming power of its relentlessness and a young audience open to sharing in that shame.

A deeply moving but highly selective look at the effects of bullying on children and teenagers.

"Bully" is a bell-weather movie, which should be seen by every middle school and high school student in America.

Sure to start some conversations

Bully" is as infuriating as it is heartbreaking. When a school principal calls her kids "good as gold" we want to throw something at the screen because she is so stupidly blind to what is happening.

At last a proactive campaign of awareness and action to defeat bullying is afoot. This documentary has already been lauded as a step toward that goal.

Where Hirsh is trying to represent how terrible bullying can be, he shoots himself in the foot by going after the most extreme and stereotypical cases.

An emotionally powerful snapshot of the problem that should serve as a valuable catalyst to public discussion.

Your heart hurts for these kids, and the blood boils, too, at irrefutable evidence that these children are not safe in their schools.

The movie seems to be content to just say "Bullying is a very real and very serious problem in American schools" as loudly and clearly as it can.

Harrowing portrait of ordinary kids being assaulted verbally and physically, and a social system that does not protect them.

The personal approach still makes "Bully" worth seeing, letting other bullied kids know they're not alone, and showing adults how dismissing bullying as "kids will be kids" doesn't cut it.

By ignoring the perpetrators, Hirsch keeps the finger pointed only at the victims and the underfunded, overworked school administrators. In a way it feels like the bullies were yet again let off the hook.

A film that is as important for bullies to see as it is for their parents to see, so everyone can understand just how devastating a problem this can be.

The pic is important for many to see. But it ends up being akin to a medical film that shows the effects of an infection, but offers nothing in terms of explaining why it occurs or ways to treat it (Full Content Review for Parents also available)

For a film that understandably only scratches the surface of its topic, Bully carries a devastating emotional punch.

Don't let that circus about the Bully's rating obscure the quality of the movie.

"Bully" is a good start to a necessary conversation, but its loving voice is likely to be drowned out by haters who hide their own wounded hearts behind Internet pseudonyms and broadcast microphones.

In Pictures: The 6 Best Business Jobs of 2012

The ever-changing responsibility of managing and evaluating the buying and selling of goods is a task typically associated with business professionals, but that?s not all they do. Many ring up sales at bustling shopping malls or greet guests as they check into hotels and resorts. The business world goes beyond the realm of financial analysts and accountants to include customer-driven professionals like cashiers and receptionists?a reality evidenced in many careers that made U.S. News? Best Business Jobs list.

The business sector is on track to add close to 3.8 million jobs over the next few years, the U.S. Labor Department projects. Here?s more about six business jobs that should see abundant growth in the coming years:

1. Meeting, Convention Event Planner. The coordination of weddings, bar and bat mitzvahs, and graduations often falls squarely on the shoulders of event planners. The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) projects employment growth of 43.7 percent for event planners by 2020.

2. Receptionist. Receptionists are usually the first to pleasantly greet patients at a clinic or job interviewees in an office. Their profession is expected to grow 23.7 percent between 2010 and 2020, according to the BLS.

3. Customer Service Representative. Customer service representatives alleviate the concerns of dissatisfied buyers by fielding complaints about why a product fails to work properly. The BLS predicts the customer service representative profession will grow 15.5 percent by 2020.

4. Cashier. Cashiers keep a cool demeanor during hectic shopping seasons, rapidly ringing up sales with ease within a small window of time. There will be approximately 250,000 new cashier openings between 2010 and 2020.

5. Real Estate Agent. Real estate agents follow the latest housing-market trends to provide home buyers with the guidance they need. The BLS projects a 12.2 percent employment growth for real estate agents by 2020.

6. HR Specialist. Making sure the right candidates are hired and vetted for the right jobs is a crucial aspect of a human resources specialist?s job. This field will add 61,600 new jobs and 36,700 replacement jobs by 2020.

Whether you?re joining a venture or starting one of your own, it never hurts to brush up on pointers to aid you in that journey. Consider these six tips for building a successful business career:

1. Get your feet wet. Diana Venditto, owner of eventi planning, says learning through immersion is the best way to prepare for her profession as well as other business careers.. According to Venditto, a senior designer and planner, it?s crucial for prospective event coordinators to work for a vendor prior to pursuing a planning career. ?You need to go work for a caterer and do some serving,? she says. ?You need to go work as a florist, and just learn a little bit about all the different vendors. That?s kind of what I did?just to make sure [event planning was] really what I liked, what I wanted, and to make sure I could handle it because it?s a lot of hours.?

2. Avoid taking on too much, too soon. It?s important to pace yourself. There?s always a learning curve when starting a new career. Allotting time for learning and growth can be your most helpful asset.

3. Maximize your flexibility. After finding your ideal business job, ?Make sure you have the patience and the willingness to work, the care, and that you?re ready to do everything that?s asked of you,? says Darnell Rollins, a guest service rep for the JW Marriott hotel in Washington, D.C. As an Elite Marriott Awards Ambassador, one of Rollins? main responsibilities is to review the records of the hotel?s elite ambassador members and those of returning guests?work that fuses customer service, attention to detail, and long hours.

4. Conduct a proactive search. A great business idea or opportunity won?t likely fall into your lap. But combining desire with action can help you attain your goal. Taking your destiny by the reins, Rollins says, is an essential key to success. ?It?s up to you to get involved and get your foot in the door,? he says. ?You can?t procrastinate.?

Sat, 21 Apr 2012 02:40:12 -0700 Samsung adds 20.3-megapixel NX20, NX210 and NX1000 to mirrorless cam lineup (update: now with video) http://rodneydiego.posterous.com/samsung-adds-203-megapixel-nx20-nx210-and-nx1 http://rodneydiego.posterous.com/samsung-adds-203-megapixel-nx20-nx210-and-nx1

http://www.engadget.com/2012/04/19/samsung-nx20-nx210-nx1000/

You probably know Samsung best as the mobile tech giant that it's exploded to become. The Korean company has also unleashed a blockbuster television or two in the past few years, along with some of the most gorgeous tablets to come out of the Far East. One area where Samsung has yet to dominate is the digital camera market, however -- the company pumps out some pretty innovative imagers, that for one reason or another haven't caught on like their Japanese counterparts, including those from the likes of Canon, Nikon, Olympus, Panasonic and Sony. Sure, Samsung's point-and-shoots could be labeled as gimmicky under-performers, despite their success in Asia, but its mirrorless cameras have been established as viable competitors in the fast-growing ILC market -- from a performance perspective, at least.

What the firm really needs to gain share is a killer model with an incredibly competitive price -- an entry-level cam that comes in at, say, $499 with a decent kit lens. Sadly, there's no sub-$500 ILC in this latest bunch, with the NX20 priced at $1,100 and the NX210 set to retail for $900. The NX1000 has yet to get a price tag, though based on those first two flavors, we wouldn't be surprised to see it hit stores with a $700 sticker. There's more to these cameras than price -- well, there is and there isn't, depending on your needs -- but in a market with offerings as solid as the $600 Sony NEX-C3 and $1,100 Olympus E-M5, what Samsung really needs is a product that drops jaws not because of its high megapixel rating, but rather its very low price tag. The company has built a solid portfolio for 2012 -- all three NX cameras include the same 20.3-megapixel Samsung-manufactured APS-C CMOS sensor with an ISO range up to 12,800, 1080/30p video, an 8fps full-res burst mode, integrated WiFi and a 3-inch display, though body size, user interface and other features will differ. Join us past the break for a closer look at each camera.
