My fam?ily moved to the United States in the late 1980s. We were refugees escap?ing the bloody and hor?rific civil war in Lebanon, the coun?try of my birth. Though I was young, the mem?o?ries of that war, the effect it had on my par?ents, neigh?bors, com?mu?nity, and nation are still clear in my mind. Spend?ing one?s youth in bomb shel?ters, afraid, con?fused, and help?less is an expe?ri?ence I would never wish upon another human being, yet the real?ity is that so many peo?ple, young and old alike, expe?ri?ence these hor?rors every?day.

As an avid gamer, the one game genre I just can?not play are FPS war shoot?ers. Your Call of Duty and Medal of Honor and Bat?tle?field type games, which to me seem to only glo?rify war, paint a very unre?al?is?tic pic?ture of one of the ugli?est and most dis?turb?ing human actions in our cul?ture. To me these games rarely if ever show the truth of war?fare, the way it changes people?s lives, destroys entire nations, and tears apart people?s psyches.

So it brings me a great sense of joy to see that Australian-based Defi?ant Devel?op?ment are work?ing on what may be the first mod?ern FPS to address war in a more seri?ous man?ner. Warco (mean?ing war cor?re?spon?dent) is a game that puts the player in the shoes of a young jour?nal?ist cov?er?ing a war. You will run around in dan?ger?ous and dynamic war?fare envi?ron?ments with?out a sin?gle weapon at your dis?posal. Instead, you have a cam?era in your hands, and must film the events as they unfold, with the goal of cre?at?ing jour?nal?is?tic con?tent for the rest of the world to see (when they aren?t too busy watch?ing real?ity tele?vi?sion). Along the way, you will have to decide whether to focus on your task cov?er?ing the con?flict, or allow your?self to get caught up in the plights of sol?diers, civil?ians, and those in need instead, thus becom?ing an ?active par?tic?i?pant? in the con?flict (and thus, per?haps, a target).

?The game has already won the Freeplay award for Best Art, and was a nom?i?nee for Best Design, Best Game Writ?ing, and Best Audio, with good rea?son. Though it doesn?t have a release date yet, it is slated for the major con?soles and the PC when it finally hits. Be sure to fol?low the game on Face?book, and check out the devel?oper site here for the lat?est news. You can also read Kotaku?s arti?cle on the game to get a lot more information.
